Cross country roundup

MUNCIE — Alyssa Johnson loves running at Delta.

Johnson won Delta’s Eagle Invitational for the fourth straight season Saturday, leading the Jay County girls to a second-place finish.

Host Delta finished with 38 points to win for the second straight season after Jay County had claimed titles in 2002 and 2003. The Patriots finished with 56 points, and Muncie Central was a distant third with 91 at the seven-team event.

Jay County’s boys struggled again, finishing last among the seven teams with 147 points. Muncie Southside finished first with 37.

Johnson, a senior, followed up her 30-second victory last year with another dominating win. She won by 19 seconds, finishing in 16-minutes, 39 seconds to outdistance Stephanie Cole of Muncie Central.

Cole’s second-place effort broke a string of three straight one-two finishes by the Patriots. Sophomore Amanda Johnson, who was second last season as a freshman, placed third this year six seconds behind Cole in 17:04.

Freshman Kylie Wellman also finished in the top 10, taking eighth in 17:36. Jessica Mosier was 19th in 18:40, and Kelly Weaver finished in 19:25 for 25th place.

Freshman Steven Kelly came out of nowhere to lead the Patriot boys. Having finished out of the top five on the team for much of the season he surged to first on the squad and 24th overall in 19:48 at Delta. Fellow freshman Brady Mills was right behind him, placing 25th in 19:58.

The first-year runners were followed by Travis Towell in 30th in 20:14, Cory Mock in 33rd with a time of 20:31 and Josh Hawn in 35th at 20:38.

Also running for Jay County were Cassie Laux (27th - 19:31) for the girls and Josh Atkinson (36th - 20:39) and Josh Selvey (40th - 20:53) for the boys.
