Johnson, Roughia key in cross country wins (09/15/07)
Collegiate Check-up
Having a Jay County High School athlete on the roster boded well in opening action for two collegiate women's cross country teams.
Alyssa Johnson helped Taylor University to victory in its season-opener Sept. 8, and Jill Roughia joined teammate Ashley Buck in turning in the top time Sept. 1 as the Huntington University won the the Goshen Hokum Karem.
Johnson, a 2006 JCHS graduate, turned in the No. 3 time for the Trojans as they won as hosts of the Taylor Invitational. She finished sixth overall with a time of 21-minutes, 30 seconds as all five scoring runners for Taylor placed among the top 10.
Roughia, who graduated from Jay County in 2005, joined Buck to post a time of 38:55 for second overall at Goshen. She was also the team's top runner Sept. 8 at the Hanover Invitational, finishing 39th in 21:34 as the team placed fourth out of 12.
Joscie Kaup

Racked up 55 digs in her last for matches for the Syracuse Univeristy women's volleyball team, which extended its winning streak to five games to push to 8-4 overall.
Kaup, the school's all-time digs leader, had her best match in a 30-25, 30-18, 33-31 victory Sept. 8 over Fordham. She totaled 25 digs in the win to go along with four assists and an ace.
The senior added 20 digs, three assists and an ace a day earlier in a five-game victory over Princeton. She also had 16 digs, two assists and two acaes against Bihnhamton, and 14 digs, six assists and an ace versus Texas Tech.
Kaup's 5.51 digs per game average this season ranks her No. 1 in the Big East and 36th in the country. On Sept. 3, she was also named the Big East's Player of the Week.

Saw her most extended playing time of the season for the No. 23 Dayton Flyers women's volleyball team Sept. 8 in victories over Radford and Jacksonville.
Gaerke played in all three games of the 30-10, 30-28, 30-25 win over Radford, sharing the team-high of nine digs. She also had four kills, two aces and a block.
The freshman added four kills, one ace and one block in just two games of action against Jacksonville.

The twin brothers competed for the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology men's cross country team, which finished third September 8 at the Hanover Invitaitonal.
Ian Thomas just missed scoring for the Engineers, finishing sixth on the team and 28th overall at the 12-team meet in 27-minutes, 30 seconds.
Mitchell Thomas finished with a time of 28:37 for 55th place.[[In-content Ad]]
