Johnson wins two OAC championships (05/12/07)

JCHS track

CONNERSVILLE - Amanda Johnson had quite a week.

Tuesday night she broke her second school record, and after Friday's Olympic Athletic Conference meet she can call herself a double champion.

Johnson won a pair of titles at the OAC competition hosted by Connersville, and Erika Hunt and Kylie Wellman each added one as the Jay County girls track team placed second with 158 points.

The host Spartans ran away with the win with 196 points, Anderson Highland finished just behind the Patriots at 155 and Muncie Southside was a distant fourth with 47.

Jay County's boys team went winless on the evening and finished last with 92 points.

Southside took the top spot with 203 followed by Highland (177) and Connersville (110).

Johnson cruised to both of her victories, the first of which came in the 1,600-meter run. She dominated the field by 16 seconds with a winning time of 5:39.94.

The junior, who broke the 400 dash school record Tuesday against Muncie Central, completed her banner week by defending her 800 run title. She crossed the finish line in 2:23.25, nine seconds faster than a year ago, to crush the field by more than eight seconds.

Wellman, a sophomore, completed the Patriot dominance of the long-distance events in the 3,200 run. She was the only runner to crack the 13-minute mark, winning by more than 10 seconds in 12:57.47.

Hunt placed first in the 100 hurdles with a time of 16.37 seconds, taking the top spot by more than a second.

The Jay County boys managed three second-place finishes.

Sean Hatzell and Brandon Reynard were both within one second of bringing home a conference crown. Hatzell was the runner-up in the 200 dash by 0.45 seconds in 23.9, and Reynard placed second in the 300 hurdles by 0.58 seconds at 41.67.

Dexter Shreve added a runner-up effort in the 400 dash at 54.42.[[In-content Ad]]
