Johnston paces Patriots (04/20/04)

Jay County Roundup

Now this is the Tyler Johnston the Jay County golf team is used to having.

After a not-so-good day at the windy Bellmont Invitational Saturday, Johnston bounced back in a big way to shoot a 1-over-par 36 Monday. He led the Patriots to a 164-168 victory over Delta Eagles.

Johnston had the best score of the meet by five strokes. He outdistanced Delta’s No. 1 player, Grant Harris, who shot a 41.

Also posting 41s on the day were Jay County’s Adam Foster and Alex Hunt. Nathan McClung finished off the Patriot team score with a 46.

Jesse Shawver and Ben Freeman each shot 47.

The Patriot junior varsity team lost to Delta Monday, 180-213.

Gray Suman posted the top score for Jay County with a 49, and Josh Thornburg followed with a 52.

James Brosher hit the clubhouse with a 53, and Adam Arnold finished at 59.

Jay County — now 2-0 in dual meets — will play at Bluffton Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

Highland hammers Pats

The Anderson Highland Scots softball team has been pounding teams all season. Monday was no exception, although the Patriots gave the visiting team plenty of help.

Jay County committed nine errors in a 17-1, five-inning loss to the Scots.

Anderson Highland scored in each of the five innings, posting four runs in the first, second and fourth. It also scored three times in the third and twice in the second.

Jay County (2-7, 1-3 Olympic Athletic Conference) scored its lone run in the fourth inning. Andrea Current reached base with a single, and Chelsea DeBoy drove her in with an RBI double.

The only other hit in the contest for the Patriots was a single by Stephanie Imel.

Ashleigh Myers suffered the loss, allowing 17 runs — 11 earned — on 18 hits. She walked one and struck out two.

Jay County will look to bounce back today when it visits Daleville at 4:30 p.m.

Moore leads WJ

Chris Moore led a day laden with wins for the West Jay boys track team. The Eagle girls got just three individual victories, but took the meet thanks to a flood of second- and third-place finishes.

Moore had four wins in the boys’ 53-47 win over the Monroe Central Golden Bears, while the girls won by a 59-41 score.

Moore didn’t dominate in any one area, instead, winning an event of almost every variety. He took first in the hurdles in 18.4 seconds, and also won the 1,600-meter run in 5-minutes, 25 seconds.

Then he grabbed a sprint victory, finishing the 400-meter dash in 1:02. For good measure he added a long jump win at 14 feet, six inches.

Andrew Lancaster backed him up with a pair of victories. He was first in the 100-meter dash in 13.7 and the 200-meter dash in 30.0.

Blake Price grabbed the other individual win for West Jay in the 800-meter run in 2:36. He also teamed with Shay White, Mike Daniels and Alan Brown to win the 4x100-meter relay in 1:00.

The Eagle girls team had three different individual winners, and stacked each event. It took second in 9 out of 10 individual events, and third in seven out of 10.

Two of the three West Jay wins led a sweep, with Kayla Clevenger finishing first in the 100-meter dash. Brittney O’Dell was second, and Trisha Champ took third.

Lindsey Current paced the other Eagle sweep in the high jump. Champ finished second, and Crystal Hutchens took third.

Kelci Reed was first in the 1,600-meter run, followed by Kelly Weaver.

Clevenger was in on both of West Jay’s winning relays, teaming with Champ, O’Dell and Jennifer Buckland to win the 4x100-meter relay. She joined Reed, Weaver and Hutchens for first in the 4x400-meter relay.[[In-content Ad]]
