Johnston wins in first (08/06/04)

Local Roundup

There were all kinds of upsets in the first round of the Pepsi Boys State Junior Championship Wednesday, and Jay County’s Tyler Johnson was in on the act. Johnston, a senior, was the 27th seed in the championship flight, but still topped Marion’s Cole Turner.

Johnston needed extra holes, but defeated the sixth-seeded Turner on the second playoff hole. He was one of eight underdogs to score upsets in the championship flight, but went on to drop his head-to-head battle with Carmel’s Peter O’Neill in round two, three and two.

The four remaining players — Nathan Wine of Fort Wayne, Chris Baker of Brownstown, Ben Lakoff of Richmond and O’Neill — will play in the semifinal and final rounds today.
