Keen blanks Knights (05/13/05)

Jay County roundup

PORTLAND — The Northeastern Knights managed to break one of Chad Keen’s streaks, but they couldn’t break them all.

Keen’s run of no-hitters came to an end Thursday, but he threw his third straight shutout to earn his third straight win as the Jay County baseball team posted a 3-0 victory.

The Patriots gave Keen, who was coming off back-to-back no-hitters against Muncie Southside and Fort Recovery, all the runs he would need by scoring twice in the first inning.

The senior took it from there, tossing a three-hit shutout. He struck out 10 batters in the contest, marking the fourth time this season he has reached double-digit strike outs.

Josh Shatto paced the offense for Jay County, which scored its third run in the sixth inning. He had a pair of hits and an RBI.

Rhett Retter and Andy Hughes added one hit apiece.

Jay County will play at home again Saturday in double-header action against Elwood at 10 a.m.

Golfers win 7th straight

PORTLAND — Four rounds in the 30s allowed the Jay County boys golf team to extend its winning streak to seven as it topped South Adams 155-210.

Each of the five Patriots in the starting lineup had at least four pars. And, they totaled just three double-bogeys out of 45 holes played.

No. 1 play Tyler Johnson led the consistent play with six pars en route to a top score of 38. Alex Hunt, Adam Foster and Ben Freeman each added 39s, and Nathan McClung shot 42.

Hunt had the lone birdie of the day on the 129-yard, par-3 eight hole at Portland Golf Club to go along with four pars. Foster opened his round with six consecutive pars, and Freeman had five pars.

Jay County also won the junior varsity competition over the Starfires, 192-255. Gray Suman paced the Patriots with a 44.

Indians top softball

ANDERSON — A couple of four run innings by the Anderson Indians, a bundle of walks and a boatload of stranded base runners led to the Jay County softball team’s 11-1, five-inning loss Thursday.

After giving Class 3A No. 8 Blackford a run Tuesday night, the Patriots (7-13) have stranded 15 runners in their last two games. Anderson took advantage of that inability to score by posting four runs in the third inning and four more in the fifth to end the contest early.

Shae Keller walked 11 batters as she took the defeat. She allowed 11 runs — six earned — on nine hits.

Saffron Redwine doubled and scored the only run for Jay County. Trisha Champ added a hit, a stolen base and an RBI.[[In-content Ad]]
