Keen sparks explosion for Patriot offense (05/06/04)

Jay County Roundup

The Jay County baseball team was going to score some runs Wednesday. Chad Keen made sure of it.

Keen drove in half of his team’s runs, leading a 10-6 Patriot victory over the Fort Wayne Wayne Generals.

Jay County (5-6) jumped out to a 6-0 lead, scoring twice in the top of the first inning and four times in the second. The host Generals (5-9) scored once in the bottom of the second inning, but never got closer than the final four-run margin.

Keen gave the Patriots’ offense, which has had its struggles this year, a serious jolt. He went 2-for-4, and garnered the lone extra-base hit with a double.

The junior racked up five RBIs, and scored a run.

Keen also tossed 22/3 innings of relief, recording seven of his eight outs on strikeouts. He allowed three runs — one earned — on two hits and one walk.

Adam Brandt joined Keen with two hits to go along with two runs and one stolen base. Heath Williams singled and scored twice, and Mike Alberson had a single and two RBIs.

Josh Shatto got the victory, allowing three runs — two earned — on four hits in 41/3 innings. He did suffer control problems, walking seven batters while striking out five.

Jay County will look to jump above .500 for the first time since April 13 when it visits Anderson Highland for a double-header Saturday at 11 a.m.

Jay softball stumbling

The Jay County softball team lost its third straight contest Wednesday, dropping by a 4-1 score to the host Bluffton Tigers.

Bluffton (7-9) scored its runs by ones, notching single scores in the first, third, fourth and sixth innings. The Patriots went without a tally in the first five frames, with Stephanie Imel scoring their lone run in the sixth.

Ashleigh Myers dropped to 3-6 with the loss, allowing four runs — two earned — on nine hits. She struck out one and did not issue a walk.

The Patriots had problems stringing hits together to support Myers, despite the continued offensive output from Imel and the sudden jolt from Jamie Walker.

Imel racked up a pair of hits, and scored her run on single by Myers.

Walker, who didn’t have a hit before Tuesday, finished 2-for-3. After going hitless in her first 17 at bats, she is now 4-for-5 in the last two games.

Jay County will go right back to the field today as it visits Anderson Highland at 4:30 p.m. for its final Olympic Athletic Conference game of the season.[[In-content Ad]]
