Keen strikes out 15 in no-hit shutout (05/02/05)
JCHS baseball
Chad Keen was outstanding in the opener. But, the Patriots could not pull off a sweep.
Keen had a milestone day, tossing a no-hitter in a game-one shutout, 5-0, but the Jay County baseball team fell 6-2 in the second game of a conference double-header with the host Muncie Southside Rebels Saturday.
The Patriots are now 3-7 overall and 1-2 in the Olympic Athletic Conference.
Muncie Southside had no answer for Keen, who recorded 16 strikeouts in a victory earlier this year against Winchester. The senior struck out 15 Rebels en route to his no-hitter. The only blemishes on his outing were a couple of walks and one error by the defense.
John Retter paced the offense with a pair of hits, two runs and an RBI. Casey Waters had two hits as well, and Eric Somers, Rhett Retter, Phil Brown and Keen each had a hit and an RBI.
The teams were locked in a pitchers’ duel through the first five innings of game two, with Jay County grabbing a 2-1 lead with a run in the bottom of the fifth. However, Southside got to Josh Atkinson for six runs in the sixth inning and added another in the seventh for the victory.
Atkinson took the loss, allowing six runs on 14 hits as he went the distance. He struck out four batters.
Waters and Somers each had two hits in the defeat.
Jay County’s junior varsity team didn’t get quite the lights-out pitching provided by Keen, but it wasn’t too far off in a couple of blowout wins over the Muncie Southside Rebels at home, 13-2 and 8-1.
Justin Mann allowed just one hit in earning the game-one victory. He went the distance, allowing two unearned runs while striking out seven and walking seven in seven innings.
R.J. Fuller took the hill in game two, allowing only one unearned run on five hits in seven innings. He struck out eight and walked two.
The Patriot offense got off to a pair of great starts, scoring once in the first inning and four times in the second in both games. It scored in every inning in the first game.
Leading that effort was Ryan Rogers, who finished 2-for-4. Luke Goetz and Tom McCowan each had two hits, including a double, in the first game, and Josh Selvey also had a pair of hits.
Mann went 3-for-4 with a triple for the Patriots (8-4) in game two, and Michael Jobe was a perfect 3-for-3 with a double. Goetz and McCowan were each 2-for-4, and Selvey singled in his only at-bat.[[In-content Ad]]
