FISHERS - The season came to a close Tuesday for the Patriot divers.

Steven Kelly and Donny McCowan of Jay County High School capped their years at the Fishers regional, finishing 16th and 20th respectively. The top eight divers advanced to Saturday's state finals.

Kelly, who was second at the JCHS sectional, finished the preliminary and semifinal rounds (eight dives) with a total of 204.5 points. He was in 16th, and only the top 12 in the 20-diver field advanced to the final round.

McCowan, the third place finisher at the sectional, scored 179.55 points.

Kyle Frebel of Homestead won the meet with 442.9 points for his 11 dives.

Stars fall to No. 5

BERNE - One of the best squads in the state proved too much for the South Adams High School boys basketball team Tuesday as the host Starfires fell 79-40 to the Class 2A No. 5 Winchester Golden Falcons.

Winchester pushed to a 17-5 lead after the first period and the Starfires were unable to close the gap. They trailed by 27 at halftime and had just 22 points through three quarters.

Tyler Koch scored 17 points to lead the Golden Falcons (17-3). Brock Morrison added 15 points, including three 3-pointers, and Daniel Maggert scored nine of his 11 points in the first half.

No South Adams players reached double figures as Justin Armenta and Cody Meshberger shared the team high of seven points. Chris Stutzman scored six points.

Eagles defeat Daleville

DUNKIRK - West Jay Middle School's wrestling team won a tight match to go along with six pins in a 51-39 victory Tuesday over the Daleville Broncos.

Zack Moser won a high-scoring battle at 120 pounds, eking out a 15-14 victory. The Eagles also had five pins in less than a minute, including Chase Louck's 22-second win at 105 pounds.

Other quick pins came from Carrolton Fischer (110) in 32 seconds, Lucas Wiemer (145) in 35 seconds, Cory Green (100) in 40 seconds and Isaac Rogers (200) in 53 seconds. Nathan Drumm also won by pin, taking the 135-pound match in 3-minutes, 38 seconds.

East Jay slams Indians

The East Jay Middle School wrestling team ran its record to 12-1 Tuesday with a 78-21 thrashing of Union City Westside.

The Chiefs had 11 pins in their 12th victory, with Kyle Garringer finishing off the 160-pound match in just 20 seconds. Austin Bentz (115) and Cody Bellis (152) each won in 47 seconds, and Cory Bellis (90) finished his match in 58 seconds.

Conner Ray (80), Matt Segraves (100), Zac Metcalf (110), Nick Leonhard (125), Eric Beougher (135), Nick Nuckols (145) and Matt Taylor (225) also turned in pins for East Jay.

Adding pins at the junior varsity level were Braden Smith-Lykins (85), Cory Bellis (90), Steven Strohl (110), Allen Pettyjohn (152) and Ethan Bost (225). Matt Segraves (100) won by a 21-4 technical fall.[[In-content Ad]]
