PORTLAND — It would’ve been hard for Mark Kelly to find a better way to come back to the court.

After missing Friday’s loss to Winchester because of health concerns, Kelly returned to the floor Tuesday against Mississinewa. His minutes were limited, but he was on the court when it counted and hit the winning shot with five seconds remaining as the Jay County Patriots edged the Indians 48-46.

“We were just keeping it until the end of the game (and trying to) get a wide open shot,” said Kelly of the final play. “Scott (Bruggeman) did a nice job of penetrating and dishing to me at the right time and the right place and I just finished.”

Kelly had a biopsy last week forcing him to miss the Winchester game, but was given a clean bill of health and returned against the Indians.

“It feels good,” he said. “It was a team effort. Everybody chipped in.”

The game had been close throughout, and Mississinewa pulled even on a Matt McCullar bucket off a Travis Heil assist with just 45 seconds to go. After a timeout at the 34-second mark, the Patriots held the ball for about 20 seconds and then got it back to Bruggeman.

Bruggeman drove into the paint, drew two defenders his way, popped off his feet and dropped a pass into Kelly’s hands under the basket. Kelly laid the ball in off the glass on the left side with 5.1 seconds to go.

Mississinewa (11-3) got a timeout and made one last try as Heil passed in to James Reed. Reed went the length of the floor on the left side, but missed as time expired.

“I saw Kelly pin the guy to his back so I dished the ball off to him and it worked out,” said Bruggeman, who finished with eight assists and scored all of his six points in the second half. He said the Patriots (6-5) just ran their normal end-of-quarter set. “We just try to get it to the open guy. Usually something falls like that and it worked out that time.”

It was yet another win over a sectional opponent, pushing Jay County to 4-0 against sectional teams this year with wins over Elwood, Blackford, Tipton, and the Indians. It has won 11 of its last 12 games against sectional opponents, which has included back-to-back titles.

“We wanted it (tonight),” Bruggeman said. “We played with heart and passion — intensity. It was all there. It just clicked.”

Patriot coach Craig Teagle said the key to the final play was just to stay patient and take advantage of the situation. Jay County had two time outs left and had the possession arrow in its favor.

“We were in a good situation. ... The kids did a nice job,” said Teagle. “... At 12 seconds we wanted (the ball) back in Scott’s hands and we just wanted everyone to have lots of spacing and let Scott penetrate. He’s been real good at hitting that pull-up shot in the paint, but we knew if he pulled the defense he’d be able to bounce-pass it to the post guy or kick it to the three. Scott did a nice job of delivering it and we scored. ... they did a great job.”

Mississinewa jumped in front early as 6-foot-8 Adam Mughmaw scored its first nine points. It led by as many as five points, but the Patriots scored the final five of the first half and the first six after the intermission to take control.

They went up by as many as seven points in the third quarter before the Indians rallied back to set up the exciting ending.

Trent Bailey, who carried Jay County with 10 first-half points, finished with a team-high of 12. Tyler Rigby went 4-of-7 from the field to join him in double figures with 10 points. Corey Comer was 3-of-4 on field goals and posted eight points, and Kelly added seven.

Andy Pinkerton led the Patriots with six rebounds.

“(He) stepped up and hit some shots,” said Teagle of Rigby, whose 3-pointer tied the game with 1:13 left in the first half. “He’s what we need. He’s an outstanding shooter. He did a great job of spotting up and hitting some shots tonight.”

Mughmaw paced Mississinewa, but scored just six points in the final three quarters to finish with 15. He notched a double-double with 11 rebounds.

Adam Skeens followed with 13 points and six boards. McCullar had six points, and Heil and Reed each scored five.

Junior varsity

A big second quarter propelled Jay County to a 47-42 victory in the JV game.

The Patriots scored 17 points in the second quarter, pushing to a 26-22 halftime lead. They maintained the four-point advantage in the third quarter and grabbed the win on the power of Jon Wenger’s 12 points.

Clint Muhlenkamp, Casey Waters and Randy Evans followed Wenger with seven points apiece.

Ryan Shell and Jordan Masters each had eight points for Mississinewa.

Freshmen

Jay County’s freshman boys basketball team traveled to Adams Central Tuesday, coming home with a 42-27 victory.

The Patriots led by just two after the first quarter and at halftime before pushing the lead to 24-20 with one period to play. They pulled away with 16 points in the fourth quarter.

Brandon Buckland led Jay County with 15 points. Aaron Daniels and Michael Jobe also reached double figures with 11 and 10 points respectively.[[In-content Ad]]
