MARION — Jay County had a chance and missed the shot. It happens.

Mark Kelly missed off the glass with three seconds left Saturday night and the Patriot boys basketball team’s three-game winning streak ended with a 54-53 loss to the Eastbrook Panthers.

“We’ve had three close ones in a row,” said Eastbrook coach Joel Roush, whose team beat Lakeview Christian 55-50 Tuesday and Oak Hill 65-62 Friday before knocking off Jay County. “We talked to our kids tonight and told them they just played a sectional schedule. It’s really a nice preparation for us.”

The Patriots (10-8) had a seven point lead in the third quarter slip away, but still had a chance to win it on the next-to-last play of the game.

After an Eastbrook timeout with 24 seconds left Jay County chose to play for the final shot. Trailing by one point it ran the clock down and made the move with approximately 10 seconds to go.

Senior point guard Heath Williams worked at the top of the key, and then passed to Trent Bailey — who hit a school-record nine 3-pointers a night earlier — on the right wing. As expected, the Panther defenders swarmed Jay County’s leading scorer, who passed to Dustin Overton on the left side.

Overton started toward the hoop, but then hit an open Kelly underneath. The junior forward had an opportunity, but his shot from just left of the bucket went too hard off the glass and Eastbrook’s Luke Jones grabbed his eighth rebound to all but seal the game.

The Panthers tossed the inbound pass long to Jeremy Lochner, who dribbled out the final two seconds.

“(We wanted) exactly what we got,” said Teagle. “We thought either Dustin would have a shot or a drive to the basket. Dustin drew Mark’s man out and he got a good shot.”

The Patriots looked as if they had taken control of the game with an 8-0 run in the middle of the third quarter, but Eastbrook (12-6) almost immediately came back.

The Panthers went on a 9-2 run to cut the lead to one point and stretched the rally to 16-4 as they scored the opening seven points of the fourth quarter. Jay County never moved in front again.

Trent Bailey tied the game at 51-51 on a 3-pointer with 1:25 to play, but Nathan Seaman’s 3-point play 20 seconds later gave Eastbrook all it needed.

Teagle said he thought his squad did not come out with the same focus it has had recently.

“I just thought mentally we weren’t ready to play,” he said. “I thought we came out flat. You can’t come out flat against a good basketball team.”

Jay County got into big foul trouble early, with Heath Williams picking up his second foul in the first quarter and Corey Comer heading to the bench with a pair of fouls just 35 seconds into the second. The Panthers had been called for just one foul when they reached the bonus with 2:28 to play in the first period.

However, the foul disparity was gone quickly — both teams had eight personal fouls with 5:00 on the clock in the second quarter — and the Patriots actually shot more free throws in the contest. Neither team was particularly impressive at the foul line however as Jay County hit just 11-of-18 while Eastbrook finished 6-of-13.

The Panthers, who led 12-11 after one quarter before a 29-29 halftime tie, were led by Josh Brooks with 15 points. Stewart Turner, Seaman and Jones each added 11.

Trent Bailey had 19 points to pace the Patriots, although he was not nearly as accurate as he was in his record-breaking effort against Union City Friday. He finished just 6-of-19 from the field, including 4-of-15 on 3-pointers, but dished out five assists.

Overton notched a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, and Kelly’s final miss kept him short of a double-double as he finished with nine points and 10 boards. Kelly was outstanding defensively, recording five blocked shots.

Jay County finished at just 38 percent shooting from the field.

“I thought we did a good job on the boards,” said Teagle as his squad notched a 36-25 advantage on the glass. “Offensively we kept the ball alive. We just didn’t finish very well.”

The Patriots will try to get back on the winning track when they visit Monroe Central (12-7) Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Junior varsity

The Jay County junior varsity team again looked sluggish for three quarters before coming alive in the final eight minutes for a 34-32 win over Eastbrook.

The Patriots (10-8) trailed 25-16 late in the third quarter, but found a spark when John Wenger hit back-to-back 3-pointers to cut the deficit to 25-22 with one period to play. Eastbrook scored the first hoop of the fourth quarter only to have Jay County tie the game on a 3-pointer by Aaron Poole followed by a driving lay-up from Randy Evans.

Zac Green gave the Patriots the lead with an old-fashioned 3-point play at the 3:39 mark. Scott Bruggeman completed a 10-0 run with a hoop with 3:25 to go and Jay County held on for the victory.

John Retter paced Jay County with 10 points. Bruggeman and Wenger each notched six points, and Green finished with five.

Kyle Holloway scored 10 points for Eastbrook, and Daniel Watson added nine.[[In-content Ad]]
