Lehman wins pair of sectional titles for SA (05/19/04)

Local Roundup

The 2004 season for the South Adams girls track team has been one powered by a pair of freshmen. Tuesday’s sectional meet was no different.

Freshman Haleigh Lehman scored a couple of sectional titles, and her classmate Katie Weaver came away with one. The pair led a group of six Starfire athletes to advance to the regional round as the team placed fourth in the 13-team field at Bluffton with 68.5 points.

Fort Wayne Harding took the team title with 111 points, Norwell was second with 80 and Bellmont placed third with 74. The top four individuals in each event earned a trip to the Fort Wayne Northrop regional Tuesday.

Lehman, who won a pair of Allen County Athletic Conference championships Friday, captured her first sectional title by crushing the field by nearly 20 seconds with a time of 5-minutes, 18.64 seconds in the 1,600-meter run. Bellmont’s Emily Conrad was a distant second in 5:38.32.

Her win over another Bellmont athlete in the 800-meter run was much tighter. She grabbed the victory in 2:27.15, three seconds ahead of Brittany Harvey.

Lehman will also move on in the 4x800-meter relay in which she teamed with freshmen Courtney Hewitt and Katie Welch and senior Lauren Tooley to place fourth in 10:34.21.

Weaver won her conference title in the 200-meter dash as she finished three tenths ahead of LeKeesha Martin of Harding in 27 seconds flat. She nearly took a second crown, finishing just one hundredth behind Fort Wayne South Side’s Michelle Hill in the 100-meter dash in 13.03.

Tooley added a third-place effort in the 3,200-meter run in 12:36.57, and Erin Kruse was third in the shot put with a toss of 33 feet, two inches.

Tribe awards

Fort Recovery held its spring athletic awards banquet Tuesday, which included naming members of the Midwest Athletic Conference All-Academic team.

The girls softball team was outstanding, as its entire starting lineup earned the honor. Going around the diamond the award winners were pitcher Alyssa Tobe, catcher Joscie Kaup, first baseman Megan Wenning, second baseman Ciera Rammel, shortstop Lisa Grisez, third baseman Krystal Rammel, left fielder Kelsie Will, center fielder Renee Evers, right fielder Sarah Garman and designated hitter/catcher Brenda Rindler.

It’s been quite a year for the Fort Recovery girls, as every eligible member of the girls basketball team also received the award in the winter.

Six members of the baseball team earned All-MAC academic honors. They were: Greg Faller, Chris Galdeen, Dusty Guggenbiller, Todd Post, Dusty Tobe and Nick Wehrkamp.

Picking up the award for the boys track team were Eric Fullenkamp, Mitch Fullenkamp, Jason Groff and Tom Roessner, and from the girls track team were Nicole Abels, Julie Link, Emily Wendel and Kristi Westgerdes.

Athletes must be at least a sophomore, earn a varsity letter and carry a 3.3 grade point average or higher in order to be named to the All-MAC academic team.

Grisez was the softball team’s winner of the Indian Award for team leadership.

Guggenbiller took the honor for the baseball team.

Westgerdes won both the Indian and Most Valuable awards for the girls track team.
