Liechty leads SA to victory

South Adams Invitational

BERNE — Evan Liechty led the South Adams High School boys to another championship Saturday. And the girls weren’t far behind.
Liechty’s first-place finish powered the Starfire boys cross country team to victory Saturday as they scored 46 points to finish first as hosts of the South Adams Invitational. Frankton was the runner-up in the 18-team field with 59 points.
The Starfire girls finished second out of 14 teams with 108 points. Northfield took the title with 75 points, and Southern Wells was third with 118.
Liechty fought off Northfield’s Caleb Augustus to win the boys race for SAHS, which also won the Bellmont Invitational, Bi-County Conditioner and Spencerville Invitational this season, in a time of 16 minutes, 21.43 seconds. Augustus finished in 16:22.67 as the top pair beat the rest of the field by 30 seconds.
Brody Shane followed in fourth place for the Starfires in 16:58, and Joel Hawbaker was seventh in 17:21. Simon Sprunger gave South Adams a fourth runner in the top 10 as he crossed the line in 17:29 for ninth place.
Tim Lehman finished off the SAHS team score with a 29th-place finish in 18:20.
The Starfire girls had a pair of athletes in the top 10, with Hannah Moore turning in a third place finish to lead the way in 20:12. Kristen Muselman posted a time of 21:04 for ninth place.
Jenna Smith was 21st in 21:45, Allison Amstutz finished 25th in 22:12 and Alexis Ford placed 84th in 25:25.

Middle school
South Adams claimed five of the top nine positions to take the girls title with 27 points ahead of runner-up Southern Wells (75). East Jay was eighth out of 11 teams with 188 points.
East Jay’s boys scored 173 points to place seventh out of eight teams while the Starfires did not have enough runners for a full squad.
Hannah Coates led the flood of SAMS runners in the top 10 in the girls race, turning in a time of 12 minutes, 30 seconds for third place behind a pair of runners from Bellmont. Kara Seffernick was fourth in 12:41, and Olivia Von Gunten placed fifth at 12:49.
Lauren Klaehn added an eighth-place finish in 13:04, and Julia Grabau was ninth in 13:10.
Alex Bader had the top effort for East Jay, placing 24th in 13:53. Breea Liette was 39th in 14:37 ahead of Kiara Walter (42nd – 14:48), Ashley Alig (45th – 14:53) and Lillian McClung (53rd – 15:29).
Jared Ford had the top time among local runners in the boys race, leading South Adams in 15th place at 12:34. Wyatt Miller was 22nd in 12:57 followed by Paul Neuenschwander (28th – 13:13) and Briar Goodwin (44th – 13:52).
Trevor Moeller’s time of 13:00 led the East Jay squad as he finished 23rd. Ethan Wendel was 41st in 13:40 ahead of Grant Kein (47th – 14:09), Caleb Chenoweth (49th – 14:16) and Cody Moser (53rd – 14:26).[[In-content Ad]]
