BERNE - There was one tiebreaker, but that was as close as the Starfires came to picking up a set Monday.

The South Adams High School boys tennis team fell 5-0 to the visiting Leo Lions, dropping each match in straight sets.

Kyle Schmidt and Jacob Smith came the closest for SAHS (2-8) as they fell just short in a first-set tiebreaker at No. 2 doubles. But they fell a couple of points short and went on to a 7-6 (8-6), 6-2 loss to Steven Jones and Josh Steury.

Chase Ingle fell 6-3, 6-3 to Aaron Crow at No. 1 singles in the second closest match of the evening. At No. 2 singles Kegan Sprunger lost 6-1, 6-3 to Zach Schumacher and at No. 3 Alex Huber fell 6-2, 6-3 to Aaron Leivis.

Landyn Waugh and Daniels Dynes suffered a 6-1, 6-3 defeat to Jordan Bowerman and Drew Grant at No. 1 doubles.

The Starfires also dropped the junior varsity match 5-2 to the Lions. Reid Zurcher won 8-1 at No. 4 singles and Ian Frank and Kerek Schwartz earned a 6-0 victory at No. 3 doubles.

SA golfers fall to 2

BLUFFTON - After picking up a pair of wins Thursday, the South Adams girls golf team was on the opposite end Monday evening.

The Starfires posted a score of 218 at Timber Ridge Golf Course to finish behind host Norwell (187) and Canterbury (196). They shot 193 in their victory Thursday at Winchester.

Alyssa Neuenschwander and Kara Lehman shared the low score for South Adams (5-10) at 51. Kaylee Imel of Norwell was the medalist with a 38, and Sara Dusman (44) led Canterbury.

Tricia Crider followed Neuenschwander and Lehman with a 56. Jansen Yoder capped the SAHS team score with a 60, and Grace Dobler had a 63.

EJ boys top Bellmont

The East Jay Middle School boys cross country teams each defeated Bellmont Monday.

The sixth and seventh grade boys team placed five runners in the top six for a 17-47 win, and the eighth graders posted a 25-32 victory. The Chief girls lost 26-31 to Bellmont.

Zane Shreve led a one-two-three finish for the EJMS sixth and seventh grade boys, winning the race in 13-minutes, seven seconds. Jalen Ryder was the runner up in 13:34, and Austin Muhlenkamp was two seconds back in third place.

Bryan Schwieterman was fifth in 14:33, and Austin Butcher finished sixth at 14:35.

Dylan Cope paced the eighth grade Chiefs with a win in 12:33, and Remington Arnold was third at 14:56. Joining them were Jacob Schlosser (sixth - 15:20), Brennen Krieg (seventh - 16:11) and Kyle Siegrist (eighth - 16:37).

Amber Huelskamp won the girls race for East Jay by 35 seconds in 13:48. Abigail Johnson was fourth in 14:40 followed by Alex Loy (fifth - 14:54), Patricia Hein (ninth - 15:19) and Julie Valentine (12th - 16:08).
