Local grads lead Bluffton

Local Roundup

The Bluffton College baseball team has struggled to start the year, but a pair of local athletes have done their part in trying to produce victories.

Kyle Alberson (South Adams) and Bob Heitkamp (Fort Recovery) are the top two hitters on the team, each posting averages well over .400 thus far this year.

In their most recent game Heitkamp had a pair of hits and an RBI in a 15-6 loss to Defiance, and Alberson added a single with two runs and an RBI.

The pair posted their best games over the last two weeks in the same contest, a 15-9 victory over Transylvania March 29.

Heitkamp, a second baseman and designated hitter, went a perfect 3-for-3 with a home run. He scored three times and also had three RBIs.

Alberson, the first baseman, was 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBIs in the victory.

Heitkamp had at least one hit in each of the last seven contests.

Thus far this season, Alberson is the team’s top hitter with a .458 average in 18 games. He has 27 hits, including four doubles and nine home runs.

He has scored a team-best 15 runs and driven in a team-high 25 runs through the first 18 games. He has a .983 slugging percentage and a .556 on base percentage.

Heitkamp is right behind him, hitting .442 in 14 games this season. He has 19 hits, including six doubles and a pair of home runs.

He is second on the team in runs with 12, and has also driven in eight runs. He carries a .721 slugging percentage and a .489 on base percentage for the 6-12 Beavers.

McClung stays on fire

Jay County graduate Kerri McClung put together a couple more solid finishes for the Bowling Green women’s track team as it continues its outdoor season.

McClung, a 2000 graduate, placed third in the shot put as the Falcons finished second in the McDonald’s Invitational at Ohio University April 6. She tossed a distance of 43 feet, 1.5 inches.

She was also fourth in the hammer throw at the meet with a distance of 153 feet, four inches.

At the Western Michigan Invitational a week earlier, McClung won the shot put with a throw of 44 feet, 2.75 inches. She was fifth in the discus in that meet with a distance of 116 feet, four inches and sixth in the hammer throw with a distance of 139 feet, nine inches.

SA graduates swinging

Brad Boyles and Kyle Sprunger, both 2000 graduates from South Adams, have aided the Bluffton College tennis team on its way to a 2-1 start to the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference season.

They led a dominated win 9-0 win over Mount St. Joseph April 5, combining for an 8-0 shutout of Marc Cruz and Jeremy Jones at No. 2 doubles. They also each competed in singles action, with Boyles defeating Cruz 6-2, 6-0 and Sprunger topping Jones 6-0, 6-0.

Bluffton suffered a 5-4 defeat to HCAC rival Hanover April 5 as well, but Sprunger defeated Jeremy Hughes at No. 4 singles in the match 6-2, 6-2.

Their only other recent match was a 9-0 stomping of Defiance.

Sprunger and Boyles teamed to top Todd Greg and John Cronkhite at No. 2 doubles by a score of 8-1. Sprunger defeated Cronkhite 6-0, 6-0 in singles action, and Boyles got by Jared Sponsellor 6-0, 7-5.

The former Starfire pair have gone unbeaten in doubles action this year, posting a 4-0 record as teammates. They are each 2-2 in singles matches.

Byrum drops start

Pete Byrum, a 2000 Jay County graduate, dropped his only recent start for the Indiana Tech baseball team.

Byrum pitched against Aquinas College as the Warriors (17-9) took an 11-3 defeat. He went 4 2/3 innings in the game, but most of the damage done against him was out of his hands.

He allowed eight hits and six runs, but only two of the runs were earned. He also struck out one and walked one.

Sprunger back in lineup

South Adams graduate Brett Sprunger found his way onto the course for the University of Indianapolis golf team recently for his second round of competition this year.

The freshman helped the Greyhounds to a second-place finish at the eight-team Wisconsin-Parkside Invitational. He shot an 86, and is averaging an 85.20 this season.

Hurdling Hoffman

Nick Hoffman, Jay County class of 2002, was one of the top finishers for the Ball State track team as it finished second at the Big Blue Classic at Eastern Illinois recently. He placed seventh in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 57.81.[[In-content Ad]]
