Local volleyball players finish college seasons (11/13/04)
Collegiate check-up
Several local volleyball players have completed successful seasons, while others are coming down the home stretch.
Libby Michael, Jenni Little, Sara Hough and Laureen Post all have finished their 2004 campaigns. Joscie Kaup and Lisa McKee are each hoping to extend their years a while longer.
Michael and Little, who play for the Anderson University Ravens, finished off their season with a 30-23, 30-18, 25-30, 30-24 loss to seventh-ranked Mt. St. Joseph in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament semifinals Nov. 6.
A 2001 Jay County graduate, Michael finished with 23 digs and four aces. Little, who played at JCHS before transferring to Kokomo, had four kills, three digs and one block.
Michael also had 37 digs, one ace, one assist and one kill in a tournament-opening victory over Hanover. Little added four kills, four blocks and one assist.
Averaging 6.12 digs per game for a season total of 741, Michael was an HCAC All-Conference second-team selection. She also finished with 30 aces, 17 kills, 13 assists and one block.
Little posted 163 kills and 29 blocks. She added 18 assists and 33 digs.
Hough, a Jay County graduate, and the Ancilla Chargers finished off their inaugural season with a flourish. Despite being the eighth seed in the National Junior College Athletic Association Region XII District E tournament, Ancilla rolled to a third-place finish which included a victory over Michigan Community College Athletic Association co-champion No. 16 Kalamazoo Valley Community College.
The Chargers also topped Lake Michigan College and Lansing Community College, a team they had lost two three times during the regular season. They took losses to No. 6 Kellogg Community College and No. 15 Vincennes to end their run in the double-elimination tournament.
Hough racked up 72 digs, 51 kills and eight aces in the tournament. She finished the season seventh in the MCCAA in digs per game with 5.74 for a total of 786.
Post ended her junior season at Capital University as the Crusaders dropped out of the Ohio Athletic Conference tournament with a round-two loss to Baldwin-Wallace. The 2002 Fort Recovery graduate played in five matches this year, posting four assists and three aces.
Kaup, a freshman libero at Syracuse, still has one regular-season match left to play before heading into the Big East tournament.
The Orange was on an 11-match winning streak before hosting West Virginia Friday night. Results of that match were not available at press time.
Kaup was outstanding in a Nov. 5 victory over Boston College. She had a team-high 12 digs, and matched her career-high with a trio of aces. She added eight digs in a win Sunday over Connecticut.
The Fort Recovery graduate now has 412 digs on the year, an average of 3.81 per game. She also has 24 aces, 17 assists, four kills and one block.
McKee, a JCHS graduate, is playing in the National Christian College Athletic Association national tournament this weekend with Johnson Bible College. The team advanced to the national tournament for the sixth straight year after winning the NCCAA MidEast Region.
For the season McKee has posted 142 kills and 24 blocks. She also has four aces.

The pair of Jay County graduates helped Wabash to wins over Illinois Wesleyan and Rose-Hulman No. 5 and 6.
Weaver, a sophomore, grabbed a victory against Illinois Wesleyan, finishing first in the 50-yard freestyle in 22.42 seconds. He was 11-hundredths ahead of teammate Matt Perkins.
Weaver, Perkins, Ben Hewitt and Michael Belanger also teamed to take first place in the 200-yard medley relay in 1-minute, 42.27 seconds. Perkins, Colin Fahey and Weaver went one-two-three in the 100-yard freestyle, with Weaver reaching the wall third in 51.61.
Wells, a junior, took fourth in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 11:42.61.
The Little Giants team of Weaver, Hewitt, Fahey and Chad Damitz added a first-place finish in the 400-yard medley relay against Rose-Hulman in 3:48.22. Weaver, Fahey, Damitz and Belanger were second in the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:24.39.
In individual events, Weaver was third in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:00.72 and fourth in the 50-yard freestyle in 23.17.
Wells matched Weaver’s individual finishes. He was third in the 1,000-yard freestyle in 11:55.46 and fourth in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:46.45.
Scott Steiner
The Bluffton College senior and South Adams graduate had an outstanding game for the Beaver football team despite a 24-14 loss to Franklin College.
Steiner was the dominant defensive player in the game as he picked off one pass and had a team-high 14 tackles. Two of his tackles went for losses, and he broke up a second pass in addition to his interception.
He leads the team this season with 110 tackles, 37 more than the next closest Bluffton player. He has three interceptions, six tackles for losses and seven pass break ups.
Abby Arnold
The 2003 Jay County graduate aided the Ball State women’s swim team to victories over Akron and Buffalo.
Arnold posted a season-best time of 25.00 seconds as she finished third in the 50-yard freestyle in the 193-107 win over Buffalo Nov. 6. She capped a one-two-three sweep for the Cardinals in the race.
She was a member of a pair of second-place relay teams. The Ball State 200-yard medley relay was second in 1-minute, 50.32 seconds, and the 400-yard freestyle relay took second in 3:39.15.
Arnold teamed with Karla Bailey, Brittany Sayler and Ashley VanOsdol to take first in the 200-yard freestyle relay a day earlier as the Cardinals blasted Akron 185.5-114.5. The team finished in 1:38.07.
She placed fourth in the 50-yard freestyle in 25.11.
Cameron Hummel
The 2003 Jay County graduate led the Rose-Hulman football team’s offense as it suffered a rough 30-3 loss to DePauw Nov. 6.
Hummel went 7-of-18 through the air for 75 yards. He also rushed 10 times for 31 yards.
Overall this season he has carried 71 times for 471 yards, a 5.6 per rush average. He is 70-of-154 passing for 651 yards and five touchdowns.[[In-content Ad]]
