The Patriots are still searching for their first victory of the season after suffering their third straight shutout loss.
Jay County High School's girls soccer team fell 3-0 Thursday to the Mount Vernon Marauders.
Mount Vernon scored twice in the opening half to take control against JCHS, which lost its previous two games 6-0 to Norwell and 3-0 to Connersville. Freshman goalie Mollie May totaled 23 saves for the Patriots.
Brianne Wellman led Jay County (0-4-1) with four shots on goal, and Kayla Phillips added two.
Eagle spikers fall
DUNKIRK - The West Jay Middle School sixth and seventh grade volleyball team fell 10-25, 25-18, 15-10 Thursday night.
Chelsea Tighe racked up 24 service points, more than twice as many as any other Eagle. Ashley Motter followed with nine points, and Mikayla Martin, Betsy Huffman and Courtney Finnerty each added five.
JC gridders win
Jay County High School's junior varsity football team won 22-14 at Muncie Southside Monday while the freshmen played to a 56-0 victory at home over Connersville.
Zach Cash did it all for the JV squad, tossing touchdown passing to Brendan Reed and Dylan Hamilton and running in a TD of his own. He also tossed two-point converson passes to Hamilton and Anthony Skeens.
Matt James and Isaac Collins each had two sacks for JCHS (2-1), and Brendan Reed added an interception.
Seth Trumbo paced the Patriot freshman team with three rushing TDs, Matt Taylor ran for a pair of scores and Eric Beougher tossed two TD passes to Kamron Bentz. Calvin Wyatt also scored a rushing touchdown, and Bentz, Wyatt and Nathan Frisch each had an interception.
WJ girls CC finishes 5th
CONVERSE - The West Jay Middle School girls cross country tem placed fifth Tuesday at the Oak Hill Invitational.
The Eagles scored 175 points, finishing eight ahead of Gas City R.J. Baskett in the 10-team field. Eastbrook won with 43 points.
WJMS's boys were ninth out of 10 with 227 points, finishing ahead of Marion McCulloch. Marion Justice finished first with 32.
Megan Price and Miranda Gerber paced the Eagle girls as they both finished in the top 20. Price was 11th with a time of 13-minutes, 8 seconds, and Gerber placed 16th at 13:30.
Jenna Starr took 44th in 15:45, Mikayla Grayson was 73rd at 17:40 and Lynsay Buckland was 90th in 19:34.
Kyle Selvey was the only West Jay boy in the top 50 as crossed the finish line in 12:41 for 24th place. Keegan Gerber finished 53rd in 14:00, followed by Jordan Wood (81st - 15:08), Jesse Finnerty (82nd - 15:11) and Kyle Murdock (88th - 15:34).

NEW CASTLE - East Jay Middle School's football teams each started the 2008 season with victories Wednesday. The eighth grade squad won 12-8 over the New Castle Trojans, and the seventh graders picked up a 16-6 victory.
The Chief eighth graders trailed late in the fourth quarter, but forced a fumble and took the lead on a Cade Price 4-yard run with 1:26 remaining. Price also had a 59-yard TD run in the second quarter, and Cody Bellis had two sacks.
Preston Keen scored on a quarterback keeper in the first quarter for the EJMS seventh grad team, and Ryan Claytor (87 rushing yards) added a two-point conversion. Claytor added a 34-yard TD run in the fourth quarter, and Jason Houston passed to Keen for a two-point conversion.[[In-content Ad]]
