MARION — The lack of depth caught up to the Patriots Thursday.
Jay County’s boys swim team lost a heart-breaker to the Marion Giants, falling 92-90 despite winning 10 out of 12 events. The Patriot boys, who are small in numbers to begin with, were missing two swimmers because of illness and didn’t have any divers for the meet.
The girls team also fell, 118-66.
Seniors Matthew Peterson and Derick Lee and junior Joseph Vormohr each won two individual events and were in on two relay wins in the close defeat.
Peterson dominated the sprints, winning the 50-yard freestyle in 25.06 seconds. He also took the 100-yard freestyle by more than four seconds in 55.66.
Lee’s wins came in the 200-yard freestyle in 2-minutes, 4.9 seconds and the 100-yard butterfly in 1:02.13. Vormohr was first in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:12.94 and the 200-yard individual medley in 2:28.40.
Peterson and Vormohr teamed with Tom McCord and Matt Eldridge for first in the 200-yard medley relay in 1:57.60 and joined Lee and Scott Walker to win the 200-yard freestyle in 1:43.22.
Lee, Walker, McCord and Eldridge grabbed the 400-yard freestyle relay victory in 3:55.68.
McCord, a freshman, accounted for the other Jay County win as he took the 100-yard backstroke in 1:07.47.
Lindsey Vesperry had two of the three victories for the girls team as it closed its regular season with a 4-8 record. She was first in the 50-yard freestyle in 27.77 and the 100-yard freestyle in 1:01.25.
