McClung celebrates with 35 at Grey Goose (05/07/04)

Jay County Roundup

Happy birthday Mr. McClung.

Jay County junior Nathan McClung may have gotten gifts from his family and friends Thursday, but he gave one to himself and his teammates as well. The birthday boy posted the best score of his career to lead the Patriot golf team to a 155 at Grey Goose Golf Club in Decatur.

The score easily outdistanced opponents Bellmont (171) and Bluffton (196) to keep Jay County perfect at 8-0 on the season.

McClung’s even-par round was four strokes better than anyone else at the meet.

He and five other Patriot players posted double bogeys on the first hole, but he bounced back in a big way on the next one. He eagled the 520-yard, par-5 second hole and was on his way.

McClung followed with pars on numbers three, five, six, seven and eight before ending his round in spectacular fashion. He scored the only birdie of the day on the 162-yard, par-three ninth hole.

Jay County enjoyed the second hole, as Tyler Johnston also knocked in an eagle on the way to his 39. He added pars on the first, third, seventh and eighth holes.

Adam Foster had three birdies for a 40, with included a one-under score on No. 2. His other birdies came on the 170-yard, par-3 sixth hole and the 390-yard, par-four seventh.

He also had a par on No. 4.

Ben Freeman rounded out the Patriot score, knocking in pars on the second, fourth, fifth and eight holes for a 41.

Each of the top four Jay County golfers shot better than every competitor from the other teams. The next best total was a 42 from Bellmont’s Ryne Johnson.

The Patriots also got a 43 from Alex Hunt, who finished with a pair of pars. Jesse Shawver struggled early, but parred numbers six and nine and had a birdie on the eighth to score a 46.

Jay County will play at the Delaware Invitational Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
