McClung dominates shot put for BG track (01/22/05)

Kerri McClung is making her final year of eligibility a good one.
The Jay County graduate, now a graduate student and fifth-year senior athlete at Bowling Green, was one of four members the Falcon women’s track team to capture a title as it finished second in the BGSU Invitational. Bowling Green scored 221.5 points, just behind champion Western Michigan’s 227.5 in the five-team event.
McClung went unchallenged in the shot put, easily winning at a distance of 15.36 meters (50.4 feet). Lindsey Arundel was second at 13.02 meters.
She added a third-place effort in the weight throw with a toss of 15.5 meters (50.9 feet).
Sara Heitkamp
The 2002 Fort Recovery graduate racked up a game-high 18 points in leading the Capital University women’s basketball team to a 70-42 destruction of Ohio Northern Monday.
Heitkamp shot 5-of-10 from the field and a perfect 6-of-6 from the foul line. She added game highs of 18 rebounds, six assists and four steals.
She was also the top scorer in a pair of recent losses as the NCAA Division III No. 13 Crusaders have lost three of their last five games after opening with 10 straight wins. She posted 17 points in a 65-56 loss to defending national champion Wilmington College and had 15 points as Capital fell 68-57 to Otterbein.
Heitkamp had eight rebounds, three assists and one steal against Wilmington and six steals, three rebounds and three assists versus Otterbein.
She jumped from third to second in the Ohio Athletic Conference in scoring at 16.6 points per game, and remains second in steals (60) and third in assists (62). She is also second on the team with 6.0 rebounds per game.
Joanie Muhlenkamp
A 2002 graduate of Jay County, she was one of six Taylor University Fort Wayne players to score in double figures Tuesday in an 86-54 trouncing of Wright State University - Lake Campus.
Muhlenkamp finished 4-of-6 from the field and 2-of-2 from the line for 10 points in the win. She also grabbed two rebounds.
She added eight points, four rebounds and one assist as Taylor lost Jan. 15 to Goshen College 70-63.
Caleb Bye
It had been more than a year since he last competed in diving, but it didn’t seem to make a difference.
Caleb Bye, a Jay County graduate who finished fifth in the state as a senior, started his freshman season last year at Clemson, but then decided to transfer to Ball State. After sitting out a year because of that transfer he turned in a pair of second-place finishes for the Cardinals as they topped Buffalo 156-81.
Bye was less than three points away from a victory in the one-meter event, finishing with a score of 291.08. Ball State swept the event, with Paul Whitaker (294.30) taking first and Ryan Plantz (288.98) in third.
The Cardinal trio also swept the three-meter event with Bye in second as he scored a 297.60. Plantz was first in the 3-meter at 318.60 and Whitaker was third at 276.45.
Amy Meyer
The South Adams graduate scored in double figures in each of the last two games for the University of St. Francis women’s basketball team, both victories.
Meyer finished 4-of-8 from the field, including 3-of-5 from 3-point range, for 11 points as the Cougars topped Grace College Jan. 15.
She also had two steals and one rebound.
She scored 11 points again as St. Francis upset NAIA No. 11 Taylor 85-74.
Tyler Niekamp
The 2003 Fort Recovery graduate saw just two minutes of action, but still got on the scoreboard as Findlay defeated Wayne State 83-64 Thursday.
Niekamp made his only field goal attempt and hit a free throw to finish with three points. The Lakers are now 15-2 and ranked sixth in the NCAA’s Division II.[[In-content Ad]]
