The margin wasn’t much more than a few of grains of sand, but it was enough.
Jay County graduate and Bowling Green senior Kerri McClung won the shot put title on the second day of the Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championships at Ohio University Friday. The event concludes today at OU.
McClung barely edged Kent State’s Breann Smith to win the MAC championship. Her throw of 51 feet, seven inches outdistanced Smith by just one-half inch.
Not only did that toss win her the title, but McClung also qualified for the NCAA Regional competition.
The victory over Smith came less than a week after the two had finished in opposite positions at the Campbell/Wright Open at the University of Akron.
At the May 7 meet Smith finished first at 54 feet, 91/4 inches, and McClung followed in second with a toss of 52 feet, 81/4 inches.
McClung was also 12th in the hammer throw with a toss of 157 feet at the Akron meet.
Erin Smith
The 2001 Jay County graduate finished off her collegiate career on the highest stage possible.
Smith competed in the 2005 NCAA Division III National Championships this week. She placed 44th at the tournament at MidPines Inn and Golf Club in Southern Pines, N.C.
She closed the tournament with her best round, an 84. In the opening three rounds she had scores of 91, 89 and 85.
The senior had an 82.8 stroke average for the 2004-05 season, and was the MVP of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament.
She was one of just 10 individuals — who competed along with 10 teams — to be chosen for the tournament by the NCAA selection committee.
Mitch Waters
The Jay County graduate had a couple of hits as the Manchester College baseball team took two out of three against Bluffton last weekend.
Waters went 1-for-2 in the opening game of the double-header May 14. He also scored a run.
The junior notched a single as the Spartans topped Bluffton 17-4 a night earlier.[[In-content Ad]]
