Meiring earns 1st victory at Transylvania (12/10/05)

One local native picked up her first career coaching victory recently while another has his team off to a .500 start.
Jill Meiring, a 1997 Fort Recovery graduate, earned her first win when her Transylvania Pioneers women’s basketball team defeated Asbury 83-73 Dec. 1. Greg Williams, a long-time coach who graduated from Portland High School in 1964, has coached the Rice Owls women’s basketball team to a 3-3 start.
Meiring, who was a four-year starter at Denison University and has been an assistant on the Transylvania staff since 2001, took over the program on Nov. 1 when previous coach Mark Turner decided to step down after 18 years with the team. She is currently the interim head coach, and the Pioneers have a 1-4 record.
This is the first season with the Owls for Williams, who as coached at the WNBA level and most recently was an assistant at the University of Dayton.
Tyler Niekamp
A career-high scoring evening led to the first career start for this 2003 Fort Recovery graduate.
Niekamp was in the starting lineup for the first time at The University of Findlay as it defeated Lake Superior State 92-67 Thursday. He scored five points in 16 minutes of play and also had one rebound and one steal.
The start came a game after Niekamp posted a career-high 12 points as Findlay, ranked 18th in the nation in Division II, lost by a 73-61 margin to Northern Michigan. He went 4-of-6 from the field and added two rebounds, one assist and one block.
Kyle Weaver
The 2003 graduate of Jay County posted a pair of top-five finishes as the Wabash swim team finished second to the host Tigers at the DePauw Invitational Dec. 3.
Weaver had his best effort in the 50-yard freestyle where he placed second in 21.88 seconds. He added a fifth-place finish in the 100 butterfly in 53.67.
The junior also teamed with Michael Hewitt, Jim Leuck and Jordan Extine to win the 200 medley relay with a time of 1-minute, 39.4 seconds.
Andrew Wells
Weaver’s former and current teammate finished in the top eight twice at the DePauw Invitational.
Wells, who graduated from JCHS in 2002, was sixth in the mile freestyle as he finished in 17-minutes, 56.92 seconds. He placed eighth in the 500 freestyle in 5:14.55.
Sara Heitkamp
A 2002 graduate of Fort Recovery, she has helped lead the Capital University women’s basketball team to a 7-0 start.
Heitkamp scored 13 of her 15 points in the second half of the Crusaders’ 62-41 victory over Marietta Wednesday. She also had six rebounds and six steals for sixth-ranked Capital.
She finished with three assists, two points, two steals and a rebound in a 65-42 win over Muskingum Dec. 3.
Trent Bailey
The Wittenberg freshman and 2005 Jay County graduate didn’t take long to show his new teammates his 3-point range.
Bailey, the JCHS single-game and career 3-point king, buried seven 3-pointers as the Wittenberg junior varsity team defeated Sinclair 91-87 Nov. 29. He finished with a game-high 25 points and also posted a team-high three steals.
He also finished with nine points, two assists and two rebounds in Wittenberg’s season-opening victory over Edison State.
Dustin Overton
A 2004 Jay County graduate, he led the Ancilla Chargers to a 90-48 thumping of Indiana Tech’s junior varsity squad Dec. 3.
Overton dominated the game, scoring 12 first-half points as the Chargers grabbed a 34-14 halftime lead. He finished with a game-high 20 points, and also grabbed five rebounds.
Ancilla has posted a 5-2 record thus far this season.
Caleb Bye
The 2003 Jay County graduated helped the Ball State men’s swim team to a first-place finish at the IUPUI House of Champions Invitational Dec. 10.
Bye finished fifth in 1-meter diving, scoring 244.05 points. He was also seventh in the three-meter event with a score of 242.75, finishing just a half-point behind Jaron Tuttle of the host Jaguars.[[In-content Ad]]
