South Adams broke into double digits in wins Monday with a 21-6, 22-20, 21-14 victory over the Union City Indians.

The Starfire volleyball team is now 10-17 overall. It finished at 2-4 in the Allen County Athletic Conference, with ACAC tournament play to begin Wednesday.

Kelly Mertz put together another outstanding match for South Adams, leading the team with 10 kills. She also shared team-highs in blocks and aces with three apiece, and contributed eight digs.

Alyssa Miller match Mertz with a trio of aces while putting up 13 assists. Renee Neuenschwander had 12 digs.

The Starfire junior varsity team lost to Union City Monday 21-18, 14-21, 21-19.

Stars dominate invite

South Adams hosted its cross country invitational Saturday and kept both trophies for itself.

The Starfires were first in the boys competition, defeating second-place Wabash 66-92. Rossville was third with a score of 123.

They were equally dominant in the girls race with a score of 62. Southern Wells was second with 79 points, and Woodlan placed third at 114.

Haleigh Lehman had the top South Adams finish, winning the girls race by nine seconds over Eva Miller of Southern Wells in a time of 16:12.

The rest of the Starfires finished in a pack between 13th and 17th place. Whitney Sprunger took 13th in a time of 17:27.

Morgan Scheiner of Milan broke up the pack of South Adams runners in 14th, but Jaime Paul, Lauren Tooley and Katie Welch filled the next three spots. Paul finished in 17:38, and Tooley and Welch had matching times of 17:39.

Lehmans, Heath and Michael, finished back-to-back for the boys team in fourth and fifth place. Heath Lehman crossed the line in 5:36.8, and Michael Lehman was one-tenth behind.

Tim Conrad was 10th in 17:55, Josh Sprunger took 14th in 18:04 and Andi Baumgartner placed 33rd in 19:16.

Both Starfire teams will run in the Allen County Athletic Conference meet at Adams Central Thursday at 5:30 p.m.[[In-content Ad]]
