Michael paces Patriots' win (05/07/03)

Jay County Roundup

Danielle Michael scored a pair of victories Tuesday against New Castle and Muncie Southside, and was on the victory-sealing 1600-meter relay team as Jay County picked up a very tight 66-64 win over the Trojans. The Rebels placed third at the meet with 26 points.

The Patriots were tied with New Castle heading into the 1600-meter relay — the final event — making it a winner-take-all race. Michael, Amber Golden, Jessica Heitkamp and Danielle Jackson came through in a time of 4:27.8, about 2.7 seconds faster than the Trojans.

Michael also had her best jump of the season and matched her best jump from last year with a leap of five feet, two inches in the high jump. She won the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 52.6.

Kristina Link and Heather Manor gave Jay County its lone one-two finish of the meet in the shot put. Link launched a huge throw of 38 feet, five inches, and Manor had a toss of 30 feet, six inches.

Beth Siegrist added a third field-even win with a jump of 14 feet, two inches in the long jump.

Nicole VanSkyock had the only other Jay County victory, taking the 1600-meter run in 5:53.

The Patriots will run in the Blackford Invitational Friday at 5:30 p.m.

Softball struggling

The hitting difficulties continued for the Jay County softball team Tuesday as it was no-hit for the third time this season in a 10-0 five-inning loss to Huntington North. The Patriots did not have a base runner in the game.

Ashley Cook took the defeat, allowing 10 runs — eight earned — in five innings. She walked four a struck out two.

Jay County will try to dig out of the slump today when it plays Bluffton at home at 4:30 p.m.

Eagles third at relays

Chris Moore, Josh Selvey and Ryan Sutton each picked up an individual victory Tuesday to lead the West Jay boys track team to a third-place finish at the Southern Wells Relays.

Moore had his victory in the 1600-meter run with a time of 5:31. He also teamed with Brandon Buckland, Sean Hatzell and Spencer Hummer to win the distance medley in 10:32.

Selvey added another distance win, taking the 800 meter run in 2:31. Ryan Sutton won the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.6.
