Miller, Patriots are runners-up at Delta (09/25/07)
JCHS cross country
MUNCIE - Alysha Miller finished second Saturday, and so did her team.
The freshman led the Jay County High School girls cross country team to a runner-up finish in the Navy Division at the Delta Invitational. The Patriots scored 68 points, 22 behind champion New Palestine, which placed three of its runners in the top six.
New Castle won the boys competition with 39 points while the host Eagles (67) placed second. Jay County does not have enough runners for a team score.
Miller earned her second-place finish in 20-minutes, 15.42 seconds, eight seconds behind fellow freshman and champion Courtney Edon of New Palestine. Senior Amanda Johnson added a fourth-place effort for JCHS in 20:37 with Molly Ryan of Pendleton Heights in front of her at 20:24 and New Palestine runners in fifth and sixth.
Sisters Leah and Kylie Wellman, a freshman and junior respectively, turned in the No. 3 and 4 times for Jay County. Leah finished a second behind Erin Kormornik of New Palestine for 12th place in 12:02, and Kylie was one second ahead of New Palestine's Lauren Sams in 21:30 for 16th.
Brittany Burris rounded out the Patriot team score in 36th at 22:59, and Cassie Laux placed 37th in 23:05.
Tevan Nichols paced the JCHS boys team as he finished 41st in 19:23. Branden Brinton was 58th in 20:59, followed by Jacob Heitkamp in 59th at 21:22.
Junior varsity
Three Patriots ran in the girls reserve race, with freshman Katie Butcher leading the group.
Butcher finished third behind New Palestine's Caitlynn Edon and Pendelton Heights' Lacey Martin in 23:28. Deidre Chenoweth was next in eighth place at 23:54, followed by Erica Butcher (14th - 25:38) and Kristen Selvey (17th - 26:17).
Middle school
East Jay's Amber Huelskamp was the runner-up in the girls race to lead the Chiefs (41) to second place. South Adams was first out of nine teams with 36.
Austin Bentz also finished second in the eighth grade boys race, in which East Jay was third out of seven teams with 78 behind Delta (34) and Rushville (71).
The Chief seventh grade boys team was fifth out of eight teams with 121 points. South Adams won with 35, and Selma was second with 41.
Huelskamp powered East Jay's girls to their runner-up effort as she finished second behind South Adams' Hannah Moore in 12:16.42. Bentz narrowly missed victory in the eighth grade boys race, crossing the line just 26 hundredths behind Zack Moore of Delta in 10:29.55.
Each of the top five EJMS girls turned in top-15 efforts, with Katie Simmons following Huelskamp in fourth at 12:21. Tiffany Huelskamp was 12th in 12:45, Abigail Johnson took 14th at 13:09 and Laura Bowen was one second back in 15th.
Bradley Leuthold gave the Chief eighth grade boys a second runner in the top 10 as his time of 11:08 was good for eighth. Eddie Muhlenkamp was 20th in 12:02, followed by Seth Ainsworth (22nd - 12:09) and Jordan McBride (33rd - 12:46).
Kyle Scott was the top East Jay seventh grade boy in 21st at 12:55, and Austin Muhlenkamp took 26th in 12:59. Trailing that duo were Zach Fullenkamp (29th - 13:08), Dylan Swingley (32nd - 13:11.18) and Chaz Carroll (33rd - 13:11.37).
In the open race Charis Beitler was fourth for East Jay's girls in 15:05, and Nicholus Leuthold took seventh for the boys at 13:55.
Gerber, Selvey lead WJ
MUNCIE - Miranda Gerber and Kyle Selvey turned in the top efforts for West Jay at Saturday's Delta Invitational. None of the Eagle teams had enough runners for a team score.
Gerber finished in 18th place out of 74 runners in the girls field, crossing the finish line in 13:18.06. Selvey was 18th in a 66-competitor seventh grade boys race at 12:35.05.
Liz Lennartz was just a quarter of a second behind Gerber in the girls race for 19th in 13:18.31. Meagan Price finished 31st in 14:17, and Cierra Nichols was 59th in 16:27.
Trailing Selvey for West Jay in the seventh grade boys race were Lee Mock (54th - 14:50), Levi Pitser (61st - 15:47) and Jon Lowe (66th - 17:18).
