Milligan leads Jay County boys over Bellmont (03/12/04)

Chance Milligan picked up a couple of victories Thursday, leading the Jay County middle school boys swim team to a 105-72 victory over Bellmont. The girls team lost a close meet to Bellmont despite another record-setting swim by Cori Vormohr, 98-87.

Milligan dominated the 100-yard freestyle, finishing more than 10 seconds ahead of the rest of the field in a time of 1:07.17. He also easily won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:35.31.

Four other Jay County boys earned wins as well, with Trey Dunn and Lance VanSkyock each doing so in personal-best times. Dunn won the 100-yard individual medley in 1:25.19, and VanSkyock was first in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:23.39.

Ryan Sutton added a victory in the 50-yard butterfly in 33.66, and Steven Kelly won the diving competition with 97.60 points.

Vormohr led a group of four winning swimmers for the girls team, setting a new team record in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:14.00. She was also first in the 100-yard individual medley by a wide margin in 1:06.15.

Kelci Reed took first in the 400-yard freestyle with a personal-best time of 5:44.91, and Briann Saxman was first in the 100-yard freestyle in a personal best 1:07.42.

Michelle Landfair picked up another win for the girls team, taking the 50-yard butterfly in 29.52.

Jay has AAU success

Three Jay County AAU boys basketball teams have been in action recently, with both the seventh and third grade squads winning tournament titles.

The seventh grade team competed in the Kids Helping Kids tournament at the Spiece Fieldhouse in Fort Wayne last week. It won the championship with a victory over LaPorte Sunday.

The team also took part in the Patriot Invitational at East Jay last month. It also won that tournament with victories over Blackford, Western Wayne and Northeastern.

The third grade squad, which is now 15-2 on the year, won the Patriots Shootout at Jay County High School last week.

Jay County defeated Selma in the championship game 32-24. It also had wins over Homestead, Covington and Seton Catholic in the tournament.

Jay County’s fifth grade team picked up a trio of wins in tournament action last week before falling to St. Vincent in its final game. It got back on the winning track with a 51-47 victory over Hartford City Wednesday.

NorthWood notes

The Jay County boys basketball team will be in action at the NorthWood regional Saturday.

The Patriots will play in the second of two semifinal games at NorthWood against the No. 7 Bellmont Braves. The game is tentatively scheduled for noon, and will begin 20 minutes after the conclusion of the 10 a.m. semifinal game between Northridge and Fort Wayne Elmhurst.

To get to NorthWood High School in Nappanee from Jay County take U.S. 27 or Ind. 1 North to Ind. 218. Follow Ind. 218 west, which will join Ind. 5.

Follow Ind. 5 north through Huntington and continue north for about another 25 miles. Then take U.S. 30 West to Ind. 15 near Warsaw.

Turn right on Ind. 15 and continue north to Ind. 6. Turn left and follow Ind. 6 west to Ind. 19 in Nappanee.

NorthWood High School is just north of town on Ind. 19 on the right side of the highway. The trip takes approximately 2 1/2 hours.

For an alternate route take U.S. 27 north from Jay County to U.S. 30 in Fort Wayne. Follow U.S. 30 west to Ind. 15 and follow directions as given above.[[In-content Ad]]
