Morgan goes deep

BERNE - Ashton Morgan shut out the Southern Wells Raiders for four innings. And she keyed the Starfires' offense.

The senior led the South Adams High School softball team to its 10th win Monday, 7-1 over Allen County Athletic Conference rival Southern Wells.

Morgan led the Starfire offense, going 3-for-3 with a double, a home run, three RBIs and a run. She earned the win, leaving the game after four innings with a 7-1 lead. She struck out eight batters and allowed just two hits and two walks.

Katrina Hawkins added two runs for SAHS (10-2, 1-0 ACAC). Jana Beitler, Liz Smith and Logan Chandler each had a hit, a run and an RBI.

Baseball falls to SW

BERNE - The South Adams baseball team pulled even in the sixth inning only to have the Southern Wells Raiders score the game-winner in the top of the seventh to beat the Starfires 8-7.

Caleb Sprunger took the loss for the Starfires, who led 3-1 and fell behind 7-4 before taking the one-run loss. He gave up one unearned run on one hit and one walk in 1 1/3 innings.

Daniel Dynes had the key hit in the sixth inning with a two-run single that tied the game. SAHS had a runner on base in the seventh, but could not push across the tying run.

Thien, Snyder honored

FORT RECOVERY - Frank Thien and Joanna Snyder received the OHSAA Archie Griffin Sportsmanship Award at the Fort Recovery High School academic awards banquet Monday evening.

Snyder and Thien won the award for their efforts in promoting sportsmanship and displaying ethics and integrity as student athletes in their school and community.

Kinsey Wenning and Brady Kahlig each were named OHSAA scholar athletes. The award goes to a senior with at least four varsity letters who holds the highest scholastic average in their class.

Both Wenning and Kahlig carry a 4.0 GPA.

FRMS girls track wins

FORT RECOVERY - Sam Tobe, Jessica Kaiser and Abby May each won three events Monday to lead the Fort Recovery Middle School girls track team to victory.

The Indians scored 74 points to finish in front of Ansonia (52) and Bradford (24). The Tribe boys were third with 42 points behind Ansonia (66) and Bradford (48).

Tobe took care of the middle distance races for FRMS, edging teammate Sierra Pugh in the 400-meter dash in 1-minute, 13.5 seconds. She was also first by nearly 15 seconds in the 800 run in 2:49.7.

Kaiser took the shot put at 27 feet even and the discus with a toss of 66 feet, 7 inches. May finished the 100 dash in a winning time of 14.6 seconds, and was also first in the 200 hurdles in 32.9.

Josh Pohl took first place in the 1,600 run for the Indian boys in 5:20. Mitch Vagedes was first at 8 feet, 6 inches in the pole vault.

Other winners for the Tribe girls were Jessica Vogel in the 1,600 run and Kelsey Fiely in the high jump.

SAMS falls just short

MONROE - South Adams Middle School's girls track team came up one point short Monday in a 55-54 loss to the host Adams Central Flying Jets.

Kristen Muselman was the lone double winner for the Starfires. She won the 800-meter run in 2-minutes, 47 seconds and was also first in the 1,600 run with a time of 6:11.

Other winners for SAMS were Allison Amstutz in the 400 dash, Leah Mitchel in the shot put, Alyssa Bluhm in the long jump and Maizy Switzer in the discus.[[In-content Ad]]
