SELMA - Count this as proof that the No. 5 and 6 players are just as important as the No. 1.
On a day when its No. 2 and 3 golfers were struggling, Jay County got matching 45s from Jonathon Fennig and Justen Moser Tuesday at Cardinal Hills Golf Course. They were each 10 strokes better than their counterparts to help lift the Patriots to a 180-183 victory over the host Wapahani Raiders.
Fennig (No. 5) and Moser (No. 6) each got off to a rough start, combining to shoot 5-over-par on the opening hole. But, they were steady the rest of the way as Jay County earned its first dual-meet victory.
Fennig played bogey golf for the next five holes, then turned in back-to-back pars on the 290-yard, par-4 seventh and the 165-yard, par 3 eighth. Moser sandwiched six bogies around a par on the 445-yard, par-5 fifth hole.
The solid scores from Fennig and Moser allowed the Patriots to overcome a 1-under-par 34 from Wapahani No. 1 Alex Holt.
Sophomore Adam Gray again had the top score for Jay County with a 42. He was 7-over through the first six holes before finishing with three consecutive pars.
Chris Shannon had one par as he rounded out the team score with a 48. Gray Suman shot 50, and Luke Darby had a 51.[[In-content Ad]]
