Moser, Teeter lead Starfires over Woodlan (01/18/05)

Local Roundup

WOODBURN — It’s rare to see a junior high player score 20 points. Two South Adams seventh graders did it in the same game Monday.

Heath Moser and Nick Teeter both broke the 20-point plateau as they led the Starfires to a 56-46 victory over the host Woodlan Warriors. The eighth grade team didn’t have as much success on offense, falling to Woodlan 36-23.

Moser was a consistent scorer throughout for the seventh grade team, putting up at least four points in every period. He scored eight in the fourth to finish with a game-best 24.

Teeter went scoreless in the first quarter and had just two points at halftime. But, he hit three 3-pointers in the third quarter and added another in the fourth to finish with 21 points.

South Adams, which trailed by nine at the half, scored 42 of its points after the break to rally for the victory.

The Starfire eighth graders trailed by 12 at the half, but got no such comeback. Cody Meshberger was their high scorer with six points, and Kyle DeArmond added five.

Jay fourth at Cathedral

INDIANAPOLIS — Jay County’s wrestling team picked up a pair of wins, but also took three losses in finishing fourth at the six-team Indianapolis Cathedral Super Duals Saturday.

The Patriots defeated Connersville 66-16 and Indianapolis Arlington 69-6. Their losses came to the host Fighting Irish, New Castle and Cincinnati St. Xavier.

Despite the three losses, Jay County came away with three champions — Josh Thornburg, Kurtis Hess and Nathan Conatser.

Hess (140) won the Cathedral title for the third straight season. He is now 20-2. Thornburg improved to 20-4 as he took the 112-pound title, and Conatser (189) bumped his record to 21-8.

Devon Huftel (152) and Bill Spahr (171) each finished 4-1 on the day, and Josh Lochtefeld (103) went 3-2.

Falcons jump to No. 3

With a home contest against the Jay County Patriots on the horizon, the Winchester Golden Falcons jumped two spots in this week’s Class 2A boys basketball poll compiled by The Associated Press.

Winchester (11-0), which hosts the Patriots Friday, improved from fifth to third in the poll after last week’s championship run in the Randolph County Tournament. The Falcons got a pair of first place votes and finished behind Jimtown (10-1) and Providence (11-0).

The Falcons will be the fourth ranked opponent this season for Jay County (5-4). The Patriots previously lost to Class 3A No. 1 Bellmont, Class 4A No. 3 Muncie Central and Class 2A No. 5 Centerville.

Winchester and Centerville will square off in a state top 10 Tri-Eastern Conference showdown Saturday.

Also, Huntington North’s girls team moved up one spot in the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association Class 4A poll after wins over Jay County and Muncie Central last week. The Vikings (13-1) improved from eighth to seventh.[[In-content Ad]]
