Muncie Central ends Jay streak (12/17/04)

Jay Co. Roundup

PORTLAND — If only they could stay away from those Muncie teams.

The Patriot freshman basketball team lost its season opener to Delta, but had won five in a row since then. That streak came to an end Thursday with a 43-31 loss to the Muncie Central Bearcats.

Jay County (5-2) managed just two points in the first quarter and never recovered. It managed to pull within seven points at the end of the third quarter after trailing by 13 at halftime, but the Bearcats pulled away in the fourth.

Michael Jobe paced the Patriots with 12 points, scoring six each in the second and third quarters. Heath Rigby had nine of his 11 points as he hit three 3-pointers in the fourth quarter.

Chiefs stay perfect

The Southern Wells Raiders couldn’t stop any of the Chief teams Thursday as two of them continued in their perfection. The East Jay eighth grade boys rolled to 7-0 with a 50-33 victory, and the seventh grade girls improved to 5-0 with a 28-11 win. The eighth grade girls and seventh grade boys each jumped above .500 with wins of 22-20 and 38-35 respectively.

Lance Franklin paced the eighth grade boys team with 12 points. Dexter Shreve added eight points and Billy Wellman scored six.

The Chief seventh grade girls got 10 points from Lindsey Wellman. Pazia Speed and Becky Muhlenkamp each had four points.

East Jay’s seventh grade boys (4-3) and eighth grade girls (3-2) each had balanced scoring efforts. The boys got 10 points from Tyler Freyburger and nine apiece from Eric Homan and Ben Vance. Kaelee Keller, Kristi Morningstar, Gina Muhlenkamp, Mackenzie Loy and Sarah Westgerdes each had four points.

WJ 7th wins, 8th falls

The West Jay seventh grade teams managed wins Thursday, but both eighth grade squads fell to defeat.

The seventh grade boys (7-2) clobbered Montpelier 56-26, and the seventh grade girls edged Winchester Driver 21-20. The eighth grade boys team dropped by a 61-34 score to Montpelier, while the girls fell to Driver 31-5.

Taylor Farmer was one of three players in double figures for the Eagle seventh grade boys, who scored in double digits in three quarters. He finished with 14 points.

John Pettus added 13 points, and Willie Mayfield scored 11. Michael Daniels chipped in seven points.

The seventh grade girls won a more defensive battle. They trailed by two points at halftime before eking out the victory.

Brittany Muhlenkamp scored 10 points for the Eagles. Amber McCowan followed with six.

West Jay’s eighth grade boys (3-6) allowed double-digit points in every quarter of their 27-point defeat. Allen Brown was the high scorer with 14 points, and Jon Hawn added nine points.

The Eagle eighth grade girls never found much offense in a game which included a scoreless third quarter. Jessica Piercey and Chelsea Grady each had two points.[[In-content Ad]]
