Murphy seeded 7th in shot, discus

Maria Murphy is the top seeded Patriot as the Jay County High School girls track team prepares for regional competition.
Murphy, a sophomore, ranks as the No. 7 seed in both of her events for Tuesday's meet at Ben Davis at 6 p.m.
The top three competitors in each event, and those meeting the state standard (the average of the ninth-place finisher in the state from the last three years), advance to the state finals.
Murphy finished second in the Muncie Southside sectional in the shot put and third in the discus.
Her runner-up effort in the shot put came at 34 feet, 8 ¾ inches. The No. 3 seed in the event is Muncie Southside sectional champion Marie Lumpkin of Union at 37 feet, and the state standard is 41 feet, 7 inches.
Murphy turned in a toss of 111 feet in the sectional in the discus. Merced Montgomery of North Central is the No. 3 seed in the event at 114 feet, 9 inches, and the state standard is 127 feet, 4 inches.
Jordan McMillan, a junior, qualified for the regional in four events, and her highest seed is No. 8 in the high jump. She will also be seeded ninth for the 100-meter dash, 10th for the 200 dash and 12th for the long jump after winning sectional titles in all three of those events.
Sophomore Katie Simmons is seeded ninth in the 1,600 run, in which she was the sectional champion, and is 10th in the 3,200 run.
The Patriot team of Kari Hemmelgarn, Eme Miller, Leah Wellman and Liz Lennartz are also seeded ninth for the 4x800 relay.
Also competing Tuesday for JCHS will be Hemmelgarn (13th seed - 800 run), Wellman (16th - 1,600 run) and Aly Miller (16th - 3,200 run). The 4x100 relay team of Sierra Weatherhead, Morgan Link, Katie Snyder and Kelsey Wood is seeded 15th, and Kim Braun, Megan Taylor and Macey Gerber and Hemmelgarn are seeded 16th in the 4x400 relay.[[In-content Ad]]
