Netters match record (09/16/05)

JCHS boys tennis

WINCHESTER — With five straight victories the Patriots have tied the record. Now they’ll have three chances to break it.

Jay County’s boys tennis team matched the school record for victories in a single season Thursday, shutting out the Winchester Golden Falcons 5-0.

The Patriots are now 10-2 on the year, matching the mark set by the 2002 squad.

They will get their first chance at the record when they visit ninth-ranked Delta Tuesday. They will then host Muncie Southside Thursday and Bellmont Wednesday, Sept. 28.

Senior No. 1 doubles duo Tyler Rigby and Randy Evans scored their second straight shutout in the win over Winchester. They rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Patrick Williams and Spencer Cook, improving to 13-2 on the year.

Rigby and Evans are undefeated in dual-meet action this year as both of their losses came at the DeKalb Invitational.

Heath Rigby and Thomas McCowan turned in a shutout first set in their match at No. 2 doubles as they won their first 10 games Thursday. They went on to a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Matthew Daly and Brock Edwards.

Kurt Hess extended his school record, picking up his 60th career win. He topped Danny Wegg 6-1, 6-2 to improve to 12-3 on the season at No. 1 singles.

Josh Ludy and Phil Powell each ran their winning streaks to three matches.

Ludy beat Daniel Baggart 6-3, 6-3 to move to 9-6 on the year, and Powell nearly blanked Jerren Fair but settled for a 6-1, 6-0 win to improve to 8-6.

Jay County won both junior varsity matches, one by way of a shutout.

Adam Horn rolled at No. 2 singles, defeating Andrew Macelaru 8-0. Jason Crouch won the No. 1 singles match 8-4 over Mike Macelaru.[[In-content Ad]]
