PORTLAND — The Jay County golf teams have accomplished varying levels of success over the past several years.

The girls team went through some very succesful years with several golfers moving on to the college ranks. But with the graduation of Elaine Hutson, the team will likely be in a rebuilding mode.

The boys team had some lean years until making a run with an exceedingly young squad this season. With a roster of mostly sophomores, the Patriots finished a stroke off of the sectional title and advanced to the regional round for the first time in school history.

Into that mix steps a pair of new coaches for the 2003-2004 season.

“I‘m excited about it,” said Doug Tipton, who is the new coach of the girls team. “I think it’s a great opportunity.”

Tipton will take over the girls team this fall, replacing two-year coach Tom Ferguson who is finishing coursework. Butch Gray will head the boys program for the departing Chris Krieg.

Gray was an assistant under Krieg in each of the last two seasons.

JCHS athletics director Brad Lindsay has high hopes for both new Patriot leaders.

“They’ve done a terrific job,” he said of Krieg and Gray, who spent six years as the head golf coach beginning in the late 1980s. “Butch has had coaching experience and he’s got a passion for golf.”

Gray will have the advantage of bringing back his entire varsity roster. Returning scoring leader Tyler Johnston will be a junior, and will have classmates Adam Foster, Ben Freeman, Alex Hunt and Nathan McClung joining him.

Jesse Shawver will be the senior leader of the group.

“With the group we have coming back, I hope we have as much or more succes as we had this year,” said Gray. “The kids want respect, and they have to go out and earn it. Now they’ve got some recognition and they have to keep working at it.”

Gray also said he hopes to keep the team’s numbers up. He said the 2002-2003 freshman golf class was small, but he’d like to see kids entering high school looking forward to becoming a part of a strong golfing tradition.

“We finished the season very strong, and we hope we can carry that momentum into next year,” said Lindsay.

The girls team loses Hutson, a regional qualifier, a year after dropping fellow standouts Kim Abbott and Adrienne Rines. Senior Cara Geesaman will be the top returning golfer for Tipton in the quickly approaching 2003 season.

“I think the kids and I both need to sit down together to set some goals,” said Tipton. “I’d like to see a lot more participation, and I’d like to see some personal improvement. I want to introduce it to a new generation of golfers and show them what a great game it is and see if we can build from there.”

“Tom Ferguson did a fantastic job,” said Lindsay of the departing coach, while expressing support for his successor. “Doug has expressed a lot of interest (in the program). We believe he’ll bring a lot of enthusiasm to the team.”[[In-content Ad]]
