PORTLAND — Facing one of the best teams in the state is hard enough. Facing one of the best teams in the state when it’s on fire is next to impossible.

The Class 4A No. 3 Muncie Central Bearcats built a 16-0 lead, went 5-of-6 from 3-point range in the first quarter and rolled over the Jay County Patriots Friday night 66-36.

“Obviously turnovers were a problem,” said Jay County coach Craig Teagle, whose team coughed up the ball 22 times. “You’ve got to contribute that a lot to the fact that Muncie Central is a very good basketball team.”

The Bearcats (6-0) left no doubt about that fact.

They made their first three field goal attempts while Jay County turned the ball over on each of its first four possessions. They had scored 16 points before Scott Bruggeman finally put the home team on the board with a 3-pointer on an assist from Corey Comer with 2:20 left in the first quarter.

That hoop was one of only two for the Patriots in the period, and the 13-point deficit was as close as the game ever got. Central closed the first quarter with a fade-away 3-pointer over Randy Evans by Tyler Riddle, who went 4-for-4 from long distance in the period, for a 24-5 lead.

Riddle’s 12-point first quarter highlighted the Bearcats ridiculous shooting effort as they went 8-of-11 in the first quarter.

“He can do that,” said Muncie Central coach Matt Fine. “He’s done that before for us this year. We see him do that every day in practice. It’s not a surprise for us.”

The Bearcats’ advantage expanded to 22 points at the half and 24 after three quarters en route to the 30-point win.

Riddle finished as the high scorer with 20 points as he finished 6-of-7 from downtown. Six-foot-six-inch senior Jordan Armstrong went 6-of-8 from the field and finished with 13 points, and Alex Daniel added 12 points.

Daniel also had five assists, and was the team’s leading rebounder with three. Josiah Miller notched four assists.

Fine, whose team committed just nine turnovers, said he was most happy it was not just jacking up 3-pointers. Rather, the Bearcats moved the ball and found open looks.

“We preach the little things,” he said. “I thought this was our most complete effort. The most satisfying thing about that is it came in a tough place to play.”

No Jay County player reached double figures as Mark Kelly and Scott “Scooter” Bruggeman shared the team-high with eight points apiece. The Patriots paid for their turnovers, getting just 31 field goal attempts compared to 44 for Central.

Kelly and Bruggeman were also the top rebounders on the squad with five each. Comer scored seven points, and Bruggeman also finished with three assists.

Randy Evans was in on a lot of the Jay County points as he worked the high-low game with Kelly and Comer for five assists.

Teagle said after the 3-point barrage in the first half, the Patriots made some changes to try to deny the long ball in the second half. The Bearcats answered by simply taking the ball inside.

“You pick your poison,” said Teagle. “You’ve got to try to take something away. They just don’t have very many weaknesses. We couldn’t find one.

“I’m very impressed with them. They’re deserving of their ranking. They just have so many weapons.”

It doesn’t get much easier for Jay County, whose only other loss this year came against Class 3A No. 2 Bellmont. It will face another state-ranked team when it travels to Centerville to take on the Class 2A No. 5 Bulldogs Tuesday at 6 p.m.

The Patriots played without senior Trent Bailey against Muncie Central and will do so again against Centerville. Bailey has been suspended for two games for a violation of team rules.

Junior varsity

Jay County’s junior varsity team went scoreless in the first quarter in a 40-28 loss to Muncie Central Friday.

The Patriots failed to put any points on the board until two minutes had ticked off the clock in the second quarter. However, they rallied to within 10-8 and trailed by just four points at the half before fading in the second half.

Rhett Retter was the top scorer for Jay County with nine points. Jon Wenger hit two 3-pointers in the fourth quarter for six points, and Randy Evans scored five points.

Brandon Jenkins paced Muncie Central with 13 points. LaMarcus Coatie had nine, and Joe Williams notched six.[[In-content Ad]]
