MUNCIE — For ages the Muncie Central Bearcats were the team which ruined the start of Jay County’s seasons. They did it again this year, just a little later.
Class 4A No. 3 Central, the long time game-two opponent for JCHS, has been moved back on the schedule, but still handed the visiting Patriots their first defeat of the 2005-06 season by a 72-48 final.
The game was much like last season’s, in which Jay County fell behind 16-0 and scored only two points in the first quarter. This time it got an early 3-pointer from Tyler Rigby for a brief 3-1 lead, but gave up the next 25 consecutive points.
The Patriots, whose 4-0 start marked the best in school history, shot just 1-of-10 to fall behind 18-3 at the end of the first quarter. They were down 26-3 before getting their second hoop of the game from Corey Comer 2:42 into the second quarter.
“The reason I’m happy is because that’s what we focus on,” said Central coach Matt Fine after watching his team improve to 5-0. “We had not been starting well in our first four games.
“It’s preparation. It’s a mind set. It’s a mentality. That’s all it is for us.”
Jay County (4-1) missed 11 of its first 12 field goal attempts before shooting 16-of-29 (55 percent) the rest of the way. The early deficit was simply too much to overcome against a team which went to the Class 4A state title game last season and is again ranked as one of the state’s best.
“I thought really out of the 12 (shots) about 10 of them were pretty good shots,” said Patriot coach Craig Teagle of his team’s early offensive futility. “The game was maybe just a little bit quicker than we’re used to.”
The Patriots showed glimpses of being able to play with Central after their difficult start, going on an 8-0 run in the second period to pull within 14 points. However the Bearcats scored the final five points of the first half, including a late 3-pointer by Brandon Jenkins, for a 39-18 lead at the break.
Jay County again got to within 14 with another 8-0 run early in the third quarter. And again Central responded with a 12-0 run spanning the third and fourth quarters to put the game away.
Terry Jenkins led four Bearcats in double figures with 15 points. Tom Freeman scored 12 points, and Ben Botts and LaMarqus Coatie each added 11. Freeman also grabbed seven rebounds, while Botts had four assists.
Fine said he was happy to see his team come closer to playing a complete game of basketball than it had in its first four victories.
“We’re working toward playing 32 (good) minutes,” he said. “We’d only played about 16 in the first four games. Tonight we probably played about 24.”
Tyler Rigby scored a game-high 18 points to lead the Patriots, finishing 7-of-9 (78 percent) from the field. He made each of his first four 3-point attempts, before finally missing one with 4:15 to play in the game.
But Jay County was plagued by 19 turnovers compared to 11 for the Bearcats. It also shot just 11 free throws while the home team went to the stripe 23 times.
Corey Comer added nine points for Jay County, and Randy Evans scored six. Scott “Scooter” Bruggeman paced the squad in assists and rebounds with five and four respectively.
Teagle said he was proud of the way his squad continued to fight after falling behind so quickly.
“I thought our kids played like they always play,” he said. “They scrapped and they clawed.”
Central has now defeated the Patriots in each of their last seven meetings.
Jay County played the opening half without senior forward John Retter, who was suspended for being late for the team bus.

Jay County led much of the way, but fell behind midway through he final period in a 47-43 loss to the Bearcats.

The Patriots (4-1) were up by five at halftime and six following at 3-pointer by Aaron Bogenschutz at the third-quarter buzzer. However, Central pulled even and swiped the lead on a couple of free throws by Evan Erby and a steal and lay-up by Davyd Jones with just under four minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. Jay County never reclaimed the advantage.
Rhett Retter scored 13 points to lead the Patriots, hitting four 3-pointers. Luke McClung scored eight points, and Casey Waters had six.
Kyle Allen scored 12 of his game-high 14 points for the Bearcats in the second half. Boyd Hatfield added 12 points, and Erby and Clint Bird each had eight.[[In-content Ad]]
