No. 4 Braves, Jay Co. end in tie (05/28/04)

Local Roundup

Another ranked team coaxed another outstanding effort from the Jay County baseball team.

The Patriots, who defeated top 10 teams Blackford and Northeastern on consecutive days two weeks ago, met up with the Class 3A No. 4 Bellmont Braves Thursday. They didn’t pull off a third win, but played very well in a 4-4 tie which was called in the top of the sixth inning because of lightning.

Jay County (17-9-1) trailed 3-0 after the top of the first inning, and scored once in the bottom of the frame. Bellmont, which was 21-4 entering the final week of the season, got the run back in the top of the fourth for a 4-1 advantage.

The Patriots scored three times in the bottom of the second with the tying run coming in on a steal of home by Heath Williams. The teams traded zeroes over the next three innings before lightning stopped the contest.

Williams finished the game with one hit, one RBI and four stolen bases. Chad Keen had a pair of hits and two RBIs, and Nathan Miller also had a hit.

Josh Atkinson entered in the second inning in relief of Mike Smith and tossed four scoreless innings. He allowed just one hit and one walk while striking out three.

The sophomore has been outstanding in limited action this year, posting a 2-0 record. He has dropped his ERA to 0.65, and has allowed just 12 hits while striking out 14 batters in 212/3 innings.

Sectional play begins Monday with Jay County playing a rematch against Class 3A No. 6 Blackford at Tipton at 1 p.m.
