No. 4 Patriots hit 3 more homers (05/23/08)

JCHS baseball

The Patriots continue to close in on milestones.

Thursday night's 11-1, six-inning win for the Class 4A No. 4 Jay County High School baseball team over the Bellmont Braves made it 13-0 at home thus far. It also gave the Patriots 23rd win of the year - they have won eight games in a row - and included three more home runs to push the season total to 63.

A victory tonight against New Castle would complete a perfect season at home. Their 23-2 mark is just three wins away from matching the school record for wins in a single season. And their 63 home runs stand third in state history, three behind Brownsburg's 2004 total and five short of the Indiana record set by Marion in 1998.

The two most prolific Patriot power hitters of the season did the home run damage against Bellmont, with Michael Jobe launching two long balls and Billy Wellman adding one. The pair of shots by Jobe gave him 17 for the season as he has shattered the school record of 12 set by Josh Ludy a year ago. Wellman's home run also pushed him past the previous school record as he now has 13 on the season.

Jobe added a double as he went 3-for-3 with four RBIs and two runs. Wellman, who has gone deep five times in the last five games, drove in three runs.

Trey Dunn had two hits, and Thomas McCowan scored twice.

Wellman improved to 6-0 on the season, giving up just his second earned run of the year. He gave up four hits and three walks while striking out eight. His ERA of 0.43 is second-best in the state among pitchers who have thrown at least 20 innings.
