No. 4 Squires overpower SA (01/30/06)

Local roundup

BERNE — South Adams had won back-to-back games. But it was left little chance to make it three in a row.

The Starfire girls basketball team played host to the Class 2A No. 4 Manchester Squires Monday, falling 54-32.

The Squires (18-1) limited South Adams to just three first-quarter points, building a 30-9 advantage at the half. The Starfires made just six field goals in the entire game, shooting 23 percent.

Sarah Purdy led a balanced Manchester attack with 13 points, and Katie Bowers joined her in double figures with 11. Libby Pattison added eight points, Christa Peden scored seven and Audrey Siebrase and Caroline Anderson each notched six.

Katie Nicols hit three 3-pointers and scored 11 points for South Adams (3-14). Erin McCollum went 5-of-6 from the free-throw line to add seven points. Kayla Coblentz grabbed five rebounds.

Anne Lehman had seven points as the Starfires lost the junior varsity contest, 26-18.

Northside rallies past EJ

MUNCIE — The East Jay seventh grade girls basketball team watched its lead disappear in the fourth quarter as it fell 33-25 to the Muncie Northside Titans.

The Chiefs (11-5), who lost by 16 to Northside in tournament action Saturday, were up 23-17 heading into the final period. They managed just two fourth-quarter points as the Titans’ Jamie Drummer scored the final 14 of the game — she had 17 in all — to give her team the victory.

Cara Garringer scored all of East Jay’s 10 points in the first quarter and finished with a team-high 13.

Fort freshmen hammered

DELPHOS, Ohio — Fort Recovery’s freshman boys basketball team had a tough trip north Monday as it fell 51-36 to the Delphos St. Johns Blue Jays.

Curtis Schroer had 12 points in the defeat, and Tom Will added nine. The Indians are 4-7 on the season.[[In-content Ad]]
