No. 6 Eagles top Jay (08/19/05)
JCHS volleyball
Jay County stayed with one of the best volleyball teams in the state for a while, but couldn’t keep up.
The Patriots suffered their first loss on the court, second in the record book, Thursday against visiting Delta. They fell to the Class 3A No. 6 Eagles 25-14, 25-8, 25-16.
Jay County is now 0-2 on the season, despite having defeated Winchester Tuesday evening. The Patriots had to forfeit the victory because they used a player in six games — junior varsity and varsity combined — and the minimum per player is five.
Delta scored the first four points of Thursday’s varsity match, but Jay County climbed back in it. The Patriots put together a pair of three-point runs to pull even at nine, and were again tied at 10 points apiece.
But the Eagles followed with a 5-0 run, which included a pair of aces from Kylie Dorton. They never gave away the lead again as they took the win.
Junior Theresa Reinhart finished with team highs of five kills and six digs. Sophomore Brittany O’Dell also had five kills.
Junior setter Erika Clark finished with 14 assists, three digs and an ace. Markie Runyon added four kills, and Shelby Rines racked up four blocks.
Jay County dropped the junior varsity match to Delta as well, 25-13, 25-24. While varsity games must be decided by two points, junior varsity games do not.
Stephanie Wellman notched five assists, two kills and an ace in the defeat. Sharon Dirksen totaled four assists, two digs and two blocks, and Brittany O’Dell had three kills and two digs.
Jessica Murdock had five digs, and Sarah Westgerdes finished with three blocks.[[In-content Ad]]
