No. 7 Delta stops Patriots (09/22/04)

PORTLAND — The Delta Eagles always mark the toughest match on the Jay County boys tennis team’s schedule. The Patriots lost Tuesday, but showed some good signs in the 7-0 defeat to the No. 7 team in the state.

Kurtis Hess (12-3) took the most games (7) of any Jay County player, and nearly grabbed a set as he pushed Zach Ervin in the second, But, Ervin managed to hold off Hess to finish the match 6-2, 7-5.

The Patriots (7-6) also got good showings at No. 1 and 2 doubles, with each team taking four games.

Randy Evans and Tyler Rigby picked up two games in each set of a 6-2, 6-2 loss to Bryce Bow and Drew DeHaven. No. 2 doubles pair Adam Arnold and Travis Smith did its best work in the first set of a 6-4, 6-0 lost to Ryan Mochal and Jared Burt.

In the other doubles match of the night Jason Crouch and Charlie Abbott were blanked 6-0, 6-0 by Josh Chambers and Daniel Klingenberg.

At No. 2 singles Matthias Scherer picked up a couple of games in a 6-1, 6-1 loss to J.D. Greenlee. In other singles matches Joshua Ludy fell 6-0, 6-0 to Paul McKinney and Jeff Sims dropped by a 6-1, 6-0 score to Steven Hopkins.

The teams also played a list of 10 junior varsity matches, with Jay County managing three victories.

Ludy defeated Bobby Helfst 8-3 at No. 5 singles, and Abbott beat Alex Whiteman at No. 6 singles by the same score. Crouch and Scherer teamed to defeat Jeff Price and Jarred Brooke at No. 3 doubles 8-5.

EJ spikers top Driver

PORTLAND — East Jay’s volleyball teams each picked up a victory Tuesday against Winchester Driver. The eighth grade team took a pair of close games 25-19, 26-24 while the seventh grade team dominated for a 25-13, 25-10 victory.

Sarah Westgerdes had five kills and three blocks to lead the eighth graders. Cori Vormohr put up eight assists, and Kaelee Keller had three aces and three digs.

Shelby Gierhart pounded five kills for the seventh grade squad, and Lindsey Wellman had six aces.

Liz Walker finished with eight assists.

WJ CC falls to Stars

BERNE — West Jay’s cross country teams traveled to South Adams Monday, with the girls team falling 16-39 to the Starfires while the boys team did not have enough runners for a team score.

Brady Mills posted the best Eagle finish, running third in the boys race in 11-minutes, 36 seconds. Kelly Weaver topped the list of girls runners in fifth place in 13:24.

Following behind Mills were Chris Mooney in ninth in 13:19, Jeremiah Cotherman in 10th in 13:22 and Ty Fullenkamp in 11th in 15:30.

Kristen Selvey was second for the girls team in 14:11, and Whitney Henderson was 10th in 15:25.

Brittany Burris placed 11th in 15:26, Carly Weaver was 12th in 15:49 and Audrey Cook was 13th in 22:30.[[In-content Ad]]
