When the Patriots recorded the final out Josh Ludy was playing third base, Thomas McCowan was in center field and Luke Goetz was at shortstop. It was that kind of day.

Jay County High School's baseball team sent 15 batters to the plate and scored nine times in the first inning Monday. Then it had some fun in a 10-0, five-inning victory over the Fort Wayne South Side Archers.

"The kids came out and kind of took care of business and then after that ... they just played solid defense and got through it," said JCHS coach Lea Selvey, whose team finished seventh in this week's Class 4A poll. "We got some kids some experience."

The Patriots, who are now 17-2, finished with 29 points in the Indiana High School Baseball Coaches Association poll released Monday. They earned one of the seven first-place votes and were three points ahead of sectional rival No. 8 Huntington North and three behind Castle and Brownsburg, which tied for fifth.

Penn (20-2) took the top spot in the poll with 64 points, and Crown Point (19-2) was second.

Selvey said he felt his team's effort at Saturday's Indy Baseball Classic proved they " belong with the big boys. I think there was a little bit of doubt ... but take two or three pitches out of that game and we were as good or better than North Central with their best kid on the mound too.

"Then we turned around and came back and pretty well handed it to Snider. Any time you can do that, it's a pretty good day. ...

"I think we're in there with them. I think it did us a lot of good to be in those situations against that caliber of team. ... It was basically semi-state, state finals level of play."

South Side found out just how good the Patriots are after missing a chance to score with three hits in the first inning. JCHS made sure the visitors never had a chance to get in the game again as it caught fire against the Archers' Chris Hambrick in the opening frame, starting the onslaught with Josh Ludy's two-run home run.

Thomas McCowan followed with a double, and Trey Dunn added an RBI single. Dunn went all the way to third on a wild pitch, and then scored when Billy Wellman reached base on an error.

Dalton McGill added a walk, Wellman scored on a wild pitch and Michael Daniels was hit by a pitch. Nick Pryor and Luke Goetz, in his second at bat of the inning, added back-to-back RBI singles.

A single from Michael Jobe and a walk to Josh Ludy loaded the bases and chased Hambrick from the game. He faced 12 batters and recorded just one out.

McCowan hit a sacrifice fly to scored Goetz, and Dunn walked before reliever Will Brown finally recorded the third out of the inning.

The nine runs on six hits put the Patriots firmly in control, and they scored their 10th run with an RBI single from Ludy in the second. From there they made some moves and had some fun.

Michael Daniels tossed the final two innings, allowing a hit and a walk while striking out three.

"He got his feet wet," said Selvey of the junior's first appearance on a varsity mound. "Sometimes what you do things year may be a prelude to what you see next year. ... We were able to save some arms."

Selvey also used defensive replacement Willie Mayfield at first base for the final three frames. It paid off as the sophomore made an excellent scoop on a throw from Ludy for the first out of the fifth inning.

"Willie is a good first baseman," said Selvey. "When Willie learns to apply his bat ... he's going to be a pretty good high school player ... I'll put him up against anybody defensively."

Selvey made several moves to start the seventh inning, putting Ludy at third, Andrew Lancaster in right field and Tyler Freyburgher at catcher for his first varsity action. And after his team got the first two outs, he Goetz's dream of playing the infield by allowing him to swap positions with McCowan.

"I don't think you're going to see Luke at short again," Selvey said, "but sometimes you've got to have a little fun."

Ludy led the Patriots, going 2-for-2 with a run, a stolen base, three RBIs and the team's 42nd home run of the season. McCowan doubled, scored once and drove in a run, and Jobe had a pair of hits.

Hambrick took the loss as seven of the nine runs he allowed in just one-third of an inning were earned. He gave up six hits and two walks.

Dunn got the win, tossing three shutout innings before giving way to Daniels.
