No. 9 Delta blanks Patriots (09/20/06)

JCHS roundup

Phil Powell almost stole a set from the Eagles, which would have been a major victory against the ninth-ranked team in the state.

Powell, a Jay County sophomore, lost his second set in a tie-breaker as the Patriot boys tennis team fell 7-0 to Delta Tuesday.

Jay County (9-4) lost every match in straight sets, but Powell made a serious run at forcing a third after losing 6-0 to Josh Chambers in the opener. Powell ran out to a 5-2 lead in the second set of the No. 2 singles match before Chambers rallied back to win four of the next five games and finish his 6-0, 7-6 (7-3) win in the tiebreaker.

In other singles matches, Josh Ludy lost 6-1, 6-3 to Zach Ervin, Kyle Simmons fell 6-3, 6-2 to Joseph Taylor and Hadmar Senk lost 6-0, 6-2 to Rafael Garcia.

In doubles action Heath Rigby and Thomas McCowan dropped 6-0, 6-0 to Jeff Price and Dan Klingenberg, Mark Alberson and Adam Horn lost 6-1, 6-1 to Zac Bow and Alex Wagner and Michael Daniels and Jared Valentine fell 6-2, 6-1 to Bobby Holfst and Caleb Austin.
