PORTLAND — The Fort Recovery Indians closed the year out with a big win and are ready to put together a streak. The Jay County Patriots could be headed in the opposite direction.

Fort Recovery opened with a 7-0 run Tuesday and never trailed, using harassing defense in a 60-46 girls basketball victory over the Patriots.

“This was a big win for us,” said Fort Recovery coach Jeff Roessner. “We’ve felt like we’ve been playing better. It was nice to get a win. This is a good way to start the new year, and maybe we can get on a roll.”

Roessner and his players said they hope to string together a few wins to get back to .500 as they host Lima Central Catholic Saturday at 6 p.m. and South Adams Tuesday.

“I’ve seen Fort Recovery play twice,” said Jay County coach Lea Selvey. “They’re a young and upcoming team. They’re a hard-working team.

“The thing that impressed me about them was they played so hard and confident.”

Selvey said his team will need to take on that type of personality as it moves on. Two of the Patriots’ next three games come against Olympic Athletic Conference favorites Huntington North (8-3) and Connersville (7-3).

The Indians (3-5) used their first possession to perfection Tuesday. They got the jump ball and proceeded to use 40 seconds before getting the shot they wanted, a 3-pointer from Holly Stein.

Ciera Rammel added a hoop, and Krystal Rammel hit a pair of free throws for the 7-0 Tribe lead.

Jay County turned the ball over on each of its first four possessions. It did not get on the board until Sarah Dirksen scored on an assist from Markie Runyon with 4:23 remaining in the first period.

Fort Recovery never relinquished the advantage, taking command of the game during the second quarter.

Leading by five after a 5-0 Patriot run, Roessner took a time out and put on the pressure. With freshman Tiff Gaerke harassing the ball on every inbound play, the Indians went to work.

Gaerke had at least 10 deflections in the span of just a few minutes, several of which ended up in easy Tribe baskets. In all, Fort Recovery parlayed the pressure into an 11-1 run and a 30-15 lead.

Jay County (6-5) never got closer than nine points again.

“Tiff played an excellent game for us,” said Roessner. “She really made that press effective. She helped us get some easy turnovers. That was a huge part of our success.”

Gaerke — playing her first full varsity contest — finished with five points, seven rebounds and five steals.

“It’s fun,” she said of her role in the defensive pressure. “We’re trying to frustrate them.

“I was nervous at first, but after you get out there you have fun.”

Ciera Rammel added three steals as the Indians forced 26 Jay County turnovers.

“We’re trying to make them lose their concentration so we can steal the ball,” said the sophomore, who also paced the Tribe with 17 points. “It seemed to work tonight. We got a lot of easy baskets.”

Joscie Kaup trailed Rammel with 11 points. She also had a team-high eight rebounds as Fort Recovery became the fifth straight team to outrebound the Patriots (43-35).

Most telling was the first quarter, in which the Tribe pulled down 14 rebounds with eight different players getting in on the act.

Freshman Holly Stein grabbed four of her seven rebounds in that first period. She also finished with eight points.

Selvey said his team did some good things, such as getting to the foul line. But they failed to convert, hitting just 16-of-30 from the free throw line.

Felisha Parr led Jay County with 13 points. Sarah Dirksen added 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds.

Junior varsity

Jay County took control early in the junior varsity game. It allowed just four points in each of the first two quarters as it stayed undefeated with a 36-24 win over Fort Recovery.

The Patriots (11-0) held the Tribe to 15 percent shooting in the first half an 19 percent for the game. The Indians stayed in it with a 37-23 rebounding advantage, but couldn’t rally from a 10-point halftime deficit.

Chelsea DeBoy paced Jay County with eight points, and Miranda Betz followed with six. Sara Garringer had five points and four rebounds, Mary Spencer had five points and Danielle Jackson put in four points.

Abby Niekamp gave Fort Recovery a boost in the second half with seven points and six rebounds. Sam Staugler finished with five points and seven rebounds.[[In-content Ad]]
