Norwell downs netters (08/22/03)

Local Roundup

The Jay County boys tennis team slipped to 1-1 on the year, but Kurtis Hess continued his success at No. 1 singles.

The Patriots suffered a 4-1 defeat, with the sophomore scoring the only victory on the night.

Hess lost his first set against Jordan Huffman before beginning his rally. He took the second set 6-4 and the third by the same score for a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory.

He is 2-0 on the season and 20-2 in his varsity career.

Jay County was close in each of the other four matches, but couldn’t pull any of them out.

Chip Feazel and Adam Paxson rolled to a 6-2 first-set victory over Joel Fiechter and Brandon Bowman and then went to battle in a thrilling second set. The pairs wrestled for every point until Fiechter and Bowman finally evened the match with a 7-1 tiebreaker win.

That was enough to finish the Patriots, who were tapped out, as the Norwell duo took the final set to finish the match 2-6, 7-6 (7-1), 6-1.

Jay County also lost first sets at No. 1 doubles and No. 3 singles in tiebreaker situations.

Wil Goodrich gave up his opening set to Ryan Newton 7-6 (10-8) and fell in the second 6-1. The team of Matthew Peterson and Randy Evans lost 7-6 (7-2) in the opening set and dropped the second 7-5.

Derek Powell fell 6-4, 6-1 to Shane Dunwiddie at No. 2 singles.

The Patriots won the junior varsity competition 2-1.

Tyler Rigby cruised past David Brege at No. 1 singles 8-2. Travis Smith and Jeff Sims teamed to take the other victory at No. 1 doubles by a score of 8-6 over Matt Graft and Brian Hahrwald.

Chad Miller lost to Lucas Gerber 8-4.

Jay County will travel to the DeKalb Invitational Saturday at 9 a.m.
