Norwell hands Starfires 33-point defeat (12/13/06)

OSSIAN - The Starfires may be looking forward to their holiday break.

South Adams' girls lost their fourth straight and eighth out of nine Tuesday, committing almost as many turnovers as they had points in a 67-34 loss to the Norwell Knights.

Norwell (6-1) took a 13-5 advantage in the first quarter and push its lead at halftime to 19 points over the Starfires, who play Garrett (8-1) Saturday before getting a full three weeks off. SAHS, which was without leading scorer Kayla Coblentz because of an illness, committed 32 turnovers and shot 19 fewer field goals and 20 fewer free throws than the Knights.

Katie Nichols led South Adams (2-8) with nine points and three assists. Jodie Muhlenkamp added six points.

Anne Lehman and Jordan Lehman each had five rebounds, and Ashton Morgan finished with four assists.

Norwell got 14 points from Haley Chaney and 12 from Allee Donaghy.

Jana Beitler scored 10 points as South Adams dropped the junior varsity contest 34-16.

Chief girls smack Bellmont

East Jay Middle School's girls teams dominated Bellmont Monday with the seventh graders staying perfect with a 35-6 victory. The eighth grade team won 30-10 to improve to 2-1.

Cara Garringer led all scorers on the evening for the Chiefs, putting in 13 points for the eighth grade squad. Katie Butcher and Brittany Manor followed with four points apiece.

Mariah Horniday paced the seventh grade team (3-0) with 10 points.

LeAnn Horn finished with eight points.

EJMS also scored two wins over Bluffton Dec. 6 with the eighth grade squad pulling out a 41-40 triumph in overtime. The seventh graders topped the Tigers 33-12.

Manor led the eighth grade victory with 17 points, and Laura Castillo also reached double figures with 12 points. Danielle Link added six points.

Kassie Hemmelgarn's 16 points paced the seventh grade team. Horniday added six points, and Whitni Somers had four points.

Fort defeats Cavs

COLDWATER, Ohio - The Fort Recovery middle school girls teams each scored twice as many first-quarter points as their Coldwater Cavalier counterparts Tuesday in a pair of victories. The Indian eighth grade team won 46-24, and the seventh graders came out on top 25-16.

Two Tribe eighth graders reached double figures as the team put up 12 points in the opening quarter and had an 18-point lead by halftime. Kendra Brunswick led the squad with 19 points, and Holly Brunswick followed with 10.

The Fort Recovery seventh grade team limited the Cavaliers to just four points in the opening quarter. It had a three-point lead heading into the final period, and held Coldwater to two fourth-quarter points for the win.

Olivia Schwieterman and Kelly Nietfeld set the pace, each scoring eight points.[[In-content Ad]]
