JCHS girls soccer
They are all tied up.
Jay County’s girls soccer team remained at .500 Wednesday after getting a score in the closing minutes for a 3-3 tie with the visiting Norwell Knights. It marked the Patriots’ second tie in four games this season, moving their record to 1-1-2.
The home team had leads of 1-0 and 2-1 in the first half, but found itself trailing 3-2 in the waning minutes of the game. Then a familiar combination got together.
Abby Schmiesing and Saffron Redwine, the pair of seniors who connected on the opening goal of the game, got together for a second time with just under four minutes left in the contest. Schmiesing dribbled in from the right side and sent in a centering pass, which Norwell goalie Nikki Rehling tried to chase down.
However, the ball scooted past Rehling, leaving the sophomore goalie out of position. Redwine was left with an easy tap-in to tie the score at three goals apiece with just 3:57 to go.
Jay County had one chance to take the lead when Dana Horn gained control at midfield after a Patriot goal kick. She passed forward to Redwine, who took a couple of dribbles before dishing the ball left to Tequila Guntle.
Guntle got behind the defense, but her shot with about 10 seconds remaining missed just outside the left post.
Redwine gave Jay County the early lead as the first of her two goals came with 26:22 to go in the first half on the first of Schmiesing’s two assists. Redwine had five of the Patriots’ 11 shots on goal, including four in the first half.
Kylie Dial, a freshman, tied the contest for Norwell five minutes later.
Jay County grabbed the lead again with just under eight minutes to go in the opening half. Redwine passed to Champ, the third senior on the team, who then passed to Horn. The sophomore delivered her second goal of the season at the 7:47 mark.
Then Dial struck again, tying the contest at 2-2 when she got wide open in the middle and chipped a shot over goalie Sara Garringer’s head. Dial notched six of the Norwell’s 10 shots in the contest, five of which came before the intermission.
Brittany Hartman, also a freshman, gave the Knights the lead with her score 18 minutes into the second half, and then Redwine forged the tie for the final margin.
Garringer finished with six saves for the Patriots before Abby Loy took over in the second half and notched one save. Rehling had eight saves for Norwell.[[In-content Ad]]
