GENEVA - South Adams' girls golf team got a taste of what the sectional competition will be like, falling 186-232 to the Norwell Knights Monday.

The Knights, who will host sectional action at Bluffton's Timber Ridge Golf Course Saturday, had the top three scores in the match against the Starfires.

Amber Melick had the best total for the Starfires with a 53 at Wabash Valley Golf Club, and Mara Gerber finished at 57.

Katie Imel led Norwell to victory with a 1-over-par 37.

Patriots cut short

HARTFORD CITY - The Jay County boys tennis team was on its way to victory Monday, but the weather brought it to a halt.

The Patriots led four of the five matches when play was stopped because of rain. The teams will resume the match Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.

Brown leads Jay JV

WINCHESTER - When Jay County's junior varsity football team needed to put some distance between itself and Winchester, Alan Brown delivered. Brown racked up more than 100 yards and scored three consecutive touchdowns as the Patriots defeated the host Golden Falcons 34-6.

Jay County led 14-6 in the second quarter when Brown (107 yards) got going, scoring on a 21-yard run. He added a 12-yard touchdown run in the third quarter - it was set up by a Dalton McGill 41-yard reverse - and a 12-yard scoring run in the fourth.

Brandon Reynard started the Patriots' scoring, returning the opening kickoff 70 yards for a touchdown. Colton Lombardo caught a 58-yard touchdown pass from John Hawn in the opening period as well.

Nathan Stephen led the defensive effort with eight tackles, and Lance VanSkyock had six tackles.

EJ runners win 2 of 3

East Jay Middle School's girls and seventh grade boys cross country teams each defeated Bellmont Monday, 24-35 and 19-43 respectively, while the eighth grade boys team lost 27-29.

Leah Wellman and Brad Leuthold each placed first to lead their respective victories. Wellman finished in 12-minutes, 32 seconds, and Leuthold crossed the line in 12:37.

Following Wellman for the girls team were Katie Butcher (third - 12:54), Katie Simmons (fifth - 13:29), Laura Bowen (seventh - 14:05) and Deidre Chenoweth (eighth - 14:13). Behind Leuthold for the seventh grade boys were Seth Ainsworth (second - 12:52), Austin Bentz (fourth - 13:04), Jordan McBride (fifth - 13:25) and Aaron Loy (seventh - 13:34).

The top five runners for the eighth grade boys team were Garrett Krieg (second - 12:33), Jacob Heitkamp (third - 12:45), Blake LeMaster (seventh - 13:42), Joe Imel (eighth - 14:24) and Kyle Scott (ninth - 14:27).

Trio score three TDs

Cade Wendel, Mitchel Bruggeman and Jordan Brumbaugh were the top performers in the opening week of the Jay Community Center/FCC Fall Flag Football League, each finishing with three touchdowns.

Wendel carried his Packers to a 28-14 win over the Buccaneers in the preschool through first grade division with scores of 20, 20 and 15 yards. Bruggeman's three scores came on runs of 15, 18 and 30 yards to lead the Texans to a 28-11 victory over the Ravens in the second and third grade division.

Brumbaugh ran for two scores and added a touchdown reception as his Chiefs defeated the Jets 28-14 in the second and third grade division.

Cole Stigleman also had a big day in the younger division, tossing a TD pass and running back two interceptions for touchdowns to lead his Cowboys to a 28-7 win over the Bears.

Three get hat tricks

Sophie Bader, Miguel Ruiz and Kazuki Kawamura each powered their teams to victory as the leading scorers in the opening week of the Jay Community Center Fall Soccer League Saturday.

Bader sealed a 4-0 victory for Adams Physical Therapy over Farm Bureau in the first through third grade girls division, scoring two of her three goals in the fourth quarter.

Ruiz also led a 4-0 victory, scoring twice for MCSS Computer in the second quarter and once in the fourth quarter against Dunn Family Dental in the fourth and fifth grade division.

Kazuki also powered his team to victory in the fourth and fifth grade division, scoring once in the first quarter and twice in the fourth as his Pizza Hut squad topped Miller Aviation 6-1.[[In-content Ad]]
