Norwell upsets Pats in sectional semis (10/20/03)

JCHS boys soccer

HARTFORD CITY — Past results are not an indicator of future success.

Jay County proved that fact true Wednesday as it avenged a regular-season loss against Huntington North in their first-round sectional game. The Norwell Knights added yet another upset to the list, avenging an earlier loss to the Patriots in Saturday’s sectional semifinal at Blackford 2-1.

The Bellmont Braves (11-7-1) eliminated Norwell in the championship match after defeating defending champion Heritage to reach the finals. Bellmont will play in the Kokomo Regional Tuesday against 15-3 Logansport.

Jay County took nearly twice as many shots as Norwell in the sectional semifinal contest, 11-6, but couldn’t get the ball into the net enough.

Norwell, which had lost to Jay County 3-0 during the regular season, struck first when Jon Starr was called for a foul in the penalty box with less than a minute to go in the first half. Senior Tanner Johnson booted his penalty kick past goalie Trent Bailey for the 1-0 lead.

Johnson struck again midway through the second half, scoring a second goal past Drew Lloyd on his only other shot of the game. That score came with 20:06 left in the game to give the Knights a 2-0 advantage.

Bailey got Jay County back within one with a penalty kick score five minutes later, but that was all the Patriots could manage. Kyle Carpenter led the team with four shots on goal, and Adam Brandt and Dave Johnston each had two.

The Patriots finished the year at 11-6.[[In-content Ad]]
