OAC title slips away (05/24/03)

Local Roundup

The Jay County baseball team’s Olympic Athletic Conference title drought just got extended by another season.

The Patriots were 6-0 in the OAC with two games to play, and needed just one win to clinch their first championship in 1994. Instead, they dropped each of their last two conference games — including a 1-0, eight-inning defeat at Anderson Highland Friday — while the two-time defending champion Huntington North Vikings won out to swipe the trophy from their grasp.

After a 1-0 win over Jay County Monday, Huntington North won both games of its double-header at Connersville Friday, 5-3 in eight innings and 5-1. The Vikings finished the OAC season at 7-1 while Jay County dropped to 6-2.

The Patriots’ bid of the conference title fell short Friday despite another outstanding effort from Josh Jellison.

The senior held the Scots scoreless for seven innings, but Jay County couldn’t put any runs on the board either. Finally, Jellison was handed his second loss of the year when Anderson Highland scored with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning.

In 71/3 innings, Jellison allowed five hits while striking out five and walking one.

Cameron Hummel, Adam Homan and Nick Timmerman each had one hit in the game as the offensive struggles continued for the Patriots. The No. 5 team in Class 3A has lost three of its last four games while scoring just four runs and garnering only five hits during the span.

The Patriots (16-4) will try to get back on track as they play a double-header at Wabash today at 11 a.m.

Starfires stumble

South Adams’ softball team got a pair of hits from Jill Lehman Friday, but didn’t have enough fire power to keep up with Fort Wayne Snider in an 8-3 defeat.

Snider scored five runs in the third inning and never trailed again. Mickayla Smith took the loss, allowing five runs — four earned — in four innings.

Lehman was 2-for-4 to lead the Starfires’ offense. She also had an RBI and a stolen base.

Carrie Nichols singles, stole a base and scored twice. Andrea Kaehr had a double, a stolen base and an RBI.

South Adams (7-13) will play against Southern Wells in first-round sectional action Monday at Churubusco at noon.[[In-content Ad]]
