GAS CITY — If this is what a Jay County addition to the Central Indiana Conference would bring, what would be the argument against such a move?

The Patriots and current CIC member Missisinewa Indians dueled in a classic Friday night with a pair of late free throws by Scott “Scooter” Bruggeman handing Jay County a 46-45 victory.

Jay County and the remaining three schools in the Olympic Athletic Conference have been looking for other options for some time.

Recently the talk has been of a possible Patriot move to the CIC, where they could join a group which includes sectional rivals Mississinewa, Blackford and Elwood.

Friday’s contest between the Patriots and Indians showed the kind of excitement and intensity such a move could bring.

“It was just a good high school basketball game, well-played by both teams,” said Chanse Young, whose Indians (5-5) lost by two to Jay County during the 2004-05 regular season. “It’s just really turned into a nice rivalry between the two of us. The way (JCHS coach Craig Teagle’s) kids play I really respect. To be honest we kind of model what we do after what he does.”

The lead changed hands seven times in the final period, and Mississinewa led 45-44 after a driving lay-up from Ryan Shell with just 29 seconds to go.

Jay County ran down the clock, with Tyler Rigby driving toward the basket and dishing the ball to his right to John Retter with less than 10 seconds left. Retter missed what looked to be an open lay-up, but Bruggeman was there to clean up the rebound and was fouled with 5.5 seconds to go.

The Indians tried to rattle the junior point guard by calling time-outs before each of his crucial free throws, but he made them both to push the visiting Patriots ahead.

Shell then had one last chance, getting exactly what the Indians wanted as he drove the length of the floor. But as he tried to get a shot off Retter knocked the ball out of his hands and out of bounds as time expired.

“The ball was up in the air forever it seemed like,” said Bruggeman of the last of his game-high eight rebounds. “Somehow I came up with it. And I went up for a power and I got fouled. I should have made it, but ...”

“I knew I had to make those (foul shots). I mean, we battled the whole game. We didn’t get the calls our way and we just had to come out with a W. I just did my best to make them.”

The victory moved the Patriots to a school-best 6-1 start, which they can improve on when they visit Muncie Southside today at 6:30 p.m.

Bruggeman, who wears No. 30, didn’t shoot particulary well from the field (2-of-7), but was 4-for-4 from the foul line as he hit the ones that mattered. He scored six of his eight points in the fourth quarter, including Jay County’s last four. He also had a team-best five assists, as many as the entire Mississinewa team.

The Indians’ No. 30, Travis Heil, scored seven of his team’s 11 points in the final period.

The teams were never separated by more than five points after Jay County opened with a 7-0 run to start the game, which was tied at 24 at the half and 34 after three periods.

Missisinewa did a solid defensive job against the Patriots, fighting through screens — Jay County was called for four illegal screens as well, three in the first quarter — and denying open looks on the visitors’ favorite shots but still came up short.

“I thought we guarded well,” said Young, noting his squad still gave Tyler Rigby a few too many open looks. “When you’ve got a team like Jay County that has guys who just know how to play basketball it’s hard to defend them. I thought we did as good a job as we could do to defend a solid team like they are.

“They’re an awful good team. If we would be lucky enough to play them (in the sectiona) I hope you’d see a similar type of game. Obviously I hope the Indians come out on top. Coach Teagle just does a great job, and you’ll probably have to beat them to win a sectional.”

Rigby took advantage of the looks he got, hitting 4-of-8 3-pointers as he matched Heil with the game high of 18 points. Retter added seven points and six rebounds for the Patriots.

Following Heil for Missisinewa were Tyler Click with nine points, Matt McCullar with eight and Shell with six. McCullar had six rebounds, and Shell grabbed five.

The Jay County victory came with quite a bit of adversity as Comer Comer picked up two first-quarter fouls and Clint Muhlenkamp had three in the first half as the pair battled 6-foot-5 McCullar in the post. Bruggeman also had two fouls before halftime.

“I think those games are fun,” said Teagle. “Those are character builders. It builds mental toughness. Those are the kind of games you want on the road.”

Jay County’s lead dwindled late in the game, but it held on for a 44-36 win over the Indians.

The Patriots’ lead hovered around the 10-point mark for most of the second half. Missisinewa hit a couple of 3-pointers in the closing minutes to pull withing four before fading to the defeat.

Casey Waters paced Jay County with eight points. Josh Selvey and Lance Franklin each had seven points, and Rhett Retter scored six.

Shane George was the top scorer for the Indians with nine points. Travis Cunningham added eight and Adam Trexler notched seven.[[In-content Ad]]
